Got off work a little early yesterday morning so inspite of the grass needing mowing I headed off to the range for a little relaxation. Pulled into the lot, looks like lots of people here today. Hmm...might be hard to get a lane. Backed the car up at the 50 yard range by an open lane.

A couple of lanes down from me was a group of about 8 or 9 young people gathered around what appeared to be some kind of instructor. In the rifle racks I noticed a few old military rifles. The instructor was talking to the kids about a Mosin rifle. He demonstrated how to load it, sight it in and shoot it. Then each kid got a chance to fire the rifle. As the morning passed he demonstrated a Mauser, an Enfield, and a M1 Garand.

Curiosity was getting the better of me. What was this? Guys and girls in the group so it couldn't be a Eagle Scout Troop. Maybe some collage course? I could not figure it out. When it seemed that they were finishing up I walked over and asked what the deal was. One of the young men intorduced himself as a high school history teacher. This was his class, they were studying WWII. He introduced me to the guy who was lecturing. He was a collector who gave talks about WWII and the small arms used by the different counties involved in it. They were from a small private school. The teacher said he got permission from the principal who was enthusiastic about his idea. Obviously not a public school or the teacher might be suspended for such right wing aggendas.

Anyway, kudos to the teacher for making history interesting and introducing some young people firearms, both their history and the enjoyment of shooting them.

Holy mackeral. That's awesome. Did you happen to get the name of the private school?

I'm tempted to call the principle and tell him that I think this is wonderful.

I'm tempted to try to talk to the history teacher to find out who the lecturer is so I can send him a check to defray his ammo costs. Very little says "I like what you're doing" like dollar bills or sweat.

demonstration of weapons and explinations of thier use, strengths and weaknesses helps understand tactics. and hence helps understand why those who won won. and who lost lost. for example. mosins, poorly made by the millions. to arm a conscript army. hence, human wave attacks.

Amazing story. Too bad stories like this are so rare that when we hear of them, we're amazed.

History class

A couple of friends and I used to go to the local High School in full WW1/2 uniform, with weapons, loaded packs, and displays. We would play the part of soldiers, in my case Marines, of the time period. My impression was of a Marine E5 from Iwo Jima, another was a Doughboy from WW1, and a third was a German Grenadeer. We would talk to the kids and explain the equipment we used and the politics of the time, and answer questions. We told them up front that the mindset of THAT TIME were quite different! This lasted 5 years, then PC and the federal Laws stopped it. Still get requests but we turn them down unless the uniforms and weapons are included!
