I recently learned my 8 yr old grade daughter loves shooting her bb gun which I did not know she had. She sits on the back patio deck steps and shoots at paper plates her dad has set up. The stock is cut off to accomodate her petite size. Last Thursday I took her to our club silhouette range to knock over Ram and Turkey sizesplus hit some swingers. I used one of the clubs scoped .22 Savage youth rifles set up on sand bags on one of our sight in benchs. First 4 shots, she hits the 4 swingers set out 30 meters. I couldn't believe my eyes. We had all ready set up a couple ram's and turkeys at 40 meters and she knocks them off the stands.......all in 42 degree weather. We lasted about 45 minutes of her plinking and she enjoyed every minute of it as I did. She did not have school Thurs and Friday and thought would be a good time to intorduce her to the real thing. Yesterday she called me and asked when are we going the next time? We are going this Thursday, after school, and will go indoors to shoot paper at 50feet. Yesterday, I ordered her a Savage Mark I, youth with accu-trigger. I all ready have a spare Nikon Monark 4.5-14 to put on it and may have an eye relief problem if can not get it back far enough. Otherwise will have to buy a scope with long eye relief like ones on club rifles. Abby was really plinking away with NO difficulties for first time! Made her Grandpa proud.

I also belong to bbbs and have a little in 3rd grade, 8 yrs old, and had him out to the range a couple times. He also enjoys the Silhouette range and should be a good challege when I get the both of them together next season.
They will do some indoor together with me this winter. Thought I would share my granddaughters and mine latest experience. I certainly will follow through with this sport she may enjoy in the future.

Great. I used to teach kids to shoot. Many kids have a knack for it. It's usually bossy parents that screw them up. Sound like she has a sharp eye and a steady hand. Keep it fun for her and you have a winner.

Very true. Bossy parents in any sport!! Luckily my son and daughter-in-law are laid back and always encourage her to have fun. She swings a golf club like a pro too, and thoroughly enjoys the game. For indoor, I will put up the Chicken, Pig, Turkey, and Ram pistol size paper target as first experience. Then graduate to rifle size when they feel they want more challenge. We have to make it a good experience. Right now, it is to take your time shooting off the sand bags using the first finger pad. We will bring along her BB gun so she can try off hand or get a feel for it when we practice, if she wants too.

Great guns!!

Teetertotter--Yah-ta-hey, Loch Sloy, Oo-rah, Ding Hao, and Keep 'em Flyin' to you! And any other words of encouragement!

The next generation is who will be carrying on our traditions, and using our firearms, when we are gone. They need all the help they can get while we are still on the green side of the sod.

Glad you got 2 that are on the right track, and good on you encouraging them!!!

I couldn't wait to give my daughter the 10 22 she wanted for her 10th birthday, and she never fails to make me proud at the range, or at the Appleseed we went to. Although she hates zombie movies, in the event of an actual zombie apocalypse she would be a headshot-making machine.

I will make sure I take care of both of them at the range! Phil, nice you have a daughter that enjoys a sport at the range. I would feel very proud too.
I plan to be a good example for my two beginners, and later will want to do competitive shooting. I'm looking forward to having fun and how to make it fun for them being indoor during our winter season. Any thoughts on how to make their indoor experience a rewarding one, will be welcomed. Example - They might get tired of the same targets whether bullseye type or Chicken, Pig..etc paper. Any food for thought as will be sometime before they will be big enough to shoot off hand. Coarse, they could surprise me!

Rondog, nice photo's of the kids. I was so excited with my 3rd grade grandaughter, I forgot the first thing.........safety glasses and should have known better. I got them in my bag now. I had Ruger indoor Wed night and then Abby Thurs night. Abby was more accurate than Ruger. Abby's concentration is unbelievable and will back off if taking to long. I did not teach her that. Yup, I am pretty proud of both.

I love it... These are some of my favorites... When my 11 year old needed to do a paper at school, she chose her hero... Annie Oakley... she cast the bullets, loaded the ammo and shot them in the pictures below.... She loves the sport.

teetertotter,

My wife asked that I tell you that picture is probably the cutest thing ever.

nice work

It was an unbelievable 60 degrees yesterday and 8 yr old grandaughter wanted to go back to the Beloit Rifle Club as her new Savage Mark 1 Y GY arrived the day before and I sighted for 40m. I mounted a Nikon Monark 4.5-14 that I had. I forgot the camera, dang. She was standing up with front stock on sand bags with 4.5 scope setting. We couldn't use the normal Chickens, Pigs.....Metalic Silhoutte range as was shut down due to public deer rifle sight-in days at high power range. Safety precautions. We had to go way down to the opposite end to Black Powder range which was open. I set the swinger out 40 meters paced off. Swinger size 3 in, 2 in, and 1 in dia.
She was hitting the 3 in. consistantly with a sllght breeze and knew about compensating and told me what she was doing. We had a great time and she told me when she needed a rest/break. She likes her new rifle and scope.
It is nice to see pictures of our youth!
