I am cycling through my bulk bricks of winchester 22 LR and replacing them with federal (I think it may be a little bit better). So a few minutes ago I was loading mags for my Ruger standard model to get ready for my next range session, and I came across a round with no powder or projectile. There is obviously no striker mark (bulk boxes don't go to the range) but it looks like the priming compound is in there. I'm tempted to sift through the box and see if there is a stray bullet floating around in there. Anyone else ever get one of these? defective 22.JPG

I had one of those in a box of CCI Mini-mag (100 round tray). No bullet or powder was in the box, just that empty case.

It happens in all bulk pack brands and is common from my experience.

Throw it out and dont spend any time worrying about it or looking for more

I had a box of rem .357 once that had like 3 bad rounds. Split cases and brass fragments tucked in when bullet was seated. All others looked/fired fine. They had me send the defective rounds and they replaced the whole box .

Have had this with bulk .22LR. They must weigh them because I have had varying round counts over the years. Have had bullets or cases but amusingly it is one or the other. I don't find a case/s and loose bullet/s to match up with. That's a head scratcher. ;) Remington, Federal and Winchester have all done that to me. Part of the reason why I don't buy those bucket or bulk boxes anymore.

The individual 50 round boxes in the 500 bricks have not posed a problem.

Considering the amount of this stuff made every day I'm surprised the manufactures do as well as they do. I can buy 22 rimfire for 5 cents a round once in awhile. Considering the rate of inflation that would have been about half a cent 50 years ago. I'll admit 22 rimfire seemed to have very few duds back then. Of course not nearly as much was made either.

I’ve had a batch of 9mm with powder, primer, bullet... but no flash hole! No way to see which round was bad in the box, we had to send several cases back because the duds tied up our Glocks big time when the primer backed half-out of the pocket and wedged in the firing pin holes.

I had a Federal match .223 with the primer inserted backwards.

I’ve had several .45 and .223/5.56 where the bullets fell into the cases because of poor crimps.

I’ve had gobs of .22 issues: misfires, duds, split cases, case head failures, bullets fall out, mangled bullets still loaded in the unopened box, etc...

If you shoot enough, or for a long time, you’ll certainly get a lemon once in a while. Which is why its important to pay attention to what’s going into your magazine or chamber, even if you only shoot ammo you roll yourself!

Stay safe!

Just say no to bulk bricks.
I sold off most of my Federal bulk , I'm burning through the one remaining., and will buy no more. Live is too short for bad .22. I now buy CCI MiniMag ; good consistency and great packaging. No more guesswork.
Costs a bit more , but .22 does not break the bank.

I have rarely had a problems out of bulk pack of any brand. For the price, I would be ok with a dud or two when I am plinking.

Yep, bulk boxes always seem to have qc issues. Once i had a case fail around the striker and shoot debris back through the action into my face! I had eye protection on, can only imagine what would have happened if I didnt.

Nowadays I buy mostly aguila ammo and haven't had any catastrophic issues. (Plus the 60gr sniper subsonic ammo is a hoot) Its a shame american companies cant keep up with quality and price point.
