Does anyone ever have any duds in .22 WMR ammo? I can honestly say I have never had one or seen one at a shooting range in my lifetime which is over 50 years now. :uhoh: It seems that about all brands of .22 LR have dud rounds. I have even had one dud in a box of $10.00 Eley. I just wondered if they used a different method for applying the priming compound on the .22 WMR or the .17 HMR for that matter? There has to be a reason why they seem to be more reliable.

I don't recall ever having a dud .22mag either. I have uncovered and fired ammo in boxes and drawers from when I was a kid, or under the seat of a pickup that looked as if they were ruined.

Well after I posted this it seems some on RimfireCentral are having dud issues with Marlin bolt guns in .22 WMR. They seem to think there may be a firing pin issue on them and not an ammo issue. Maybe I have just got lucky!

I have been shooting 22 magnums for over 50 years. I do not recall ever having a dud. I have had a Marlin Bolt Action in .22 magnum for about 25 years,..and I can't even think about the number of rounds I have put through it without incident. It's one of my most favorite shooters.

I only recently picked up a Marlin 22WMR bolt gun. So far no failures. My 22LR Remington rifle and my 22LR handguns fail ~1-2% of the time. I do think most of my failures to fire are due to light firing pin strikes FWIW. It could have more to do with the fact that my WMR gets fed good ammo while the 22LR get whatever is on sale ;)

I have a Marlin 917V (its a bolt action 17 hmr gun)
And I have indeed had firing pin issues. I had a round that didn't go off, waited it out nothing so i pulled the bolt back far enough to re cock but not eject, fired again and it worked this time. Bullet wasn't rotated in relation to the firing pin so its unlikely (although still possible) to be a primer issue. If I remember correctly the 917V is a re-chambered 22 wmr bolt action so should be applicable here.

I've had beat-up packages contain a few duds (I think every one has fired when re-struck in a different spot)

But that was seriously abused ammo, most of the fear of "rimfire duds" is based on cheap bulk .22s/l/lr ammo, and the people who don't understand the structural differences between .22wmr and .22lr are the loudest voices in the "rimfire ammo isn't reliable" crowd.

Is the rim on a WMR any thicker than an LR? That might give the priming compound more room to seep in and distribute well.

Mostly, I figure it's because .22LR has been cranked out by the billions, and WMR has smaller run sizes. Besides, at more than five times the price, it better be more reliable!

You may wish to check out the thread on RimfireCentral under .22 WMR ammo where they are discussing this issue and trying to come up with a solution. Here's a link:

The only firearms I have owned in .22 WMR have either been Ruger's or Winchester's and they as I have stated have been 100% reliable. I hope that trend continues!

Something you never think about until someone brings it up. While I have had duds in .22 S ,L, and LR, in all my years of shooting I can't remember a single .22 magnum dud.

I have an old Marlin 22 mag, 980DL I think, and it misfires quite often.

never

I have never had a misfire or dud in over 40 years with the 22 mag round

No duds that I can recall in thirteen years with my CZ452, although I have had some failures to extract due to split brass after shooting ten year old Winchester SuperX.
On the .22lr front these days I only use CCI standard velocity, I get the occasional light strike in my handguns but they always go bang on the second strike.

Nope.

Not ever that I can recall in almost thirty years. Can't think of anyone else I know either not counting an actual firearm related issue.

No duds in .22 WMR ever. The only duds I've had in .22 LR have been from the very few bulk packs that I have bought. CCI Standard is my go to ammo for plinking. I pay $25 a brick. It is very accurate for the price and I have never had a dud.

Apparently we have established that the .22 WMR is much more likely to fire than the .22 LR. :D Seems that some on RimfireCentral that was having issues have narrowed it down to improper headspace.

i guess I will buck the trend, I have with winchester brand. In one box six of them and another box of the same lot about 10. Winchester sent me four free boxes.

Did the replacement ammo cure the problem and was this problem with a Marlin bolt action also?
