I have a S&W Model 36 (no dash) that I'd like to load with +p's for carry. I know the revolver isn't rated for a continuous diet of these and I'd rather not shoot any for practice either. I want to carry 158gr LSWCHP +p. My question is this. If I find a standard pressure load that shoots to the same point of aim in my 4" Model 19-5 as the 158gr +p's will that hold true for the Chief's Special as well? That way I could practice with a standard pressure load and not put any undue strain on the little revolver. If not, I'll just carry 125gr JHP in the 36.

It is my opinion after many years of research on the question that factory +P .38 Special loads will not damage or excessive wear a steel frame revolver of quality design like a Colt or S&W. A 36 (no change) was made back when the .38 Special was still loaded to its full potential and these original loads generated about the same pressures as the current +Ps.

I, personally, would give zero concern to using factory +P in a Model 36. Others will disagree so there you go. You have to decide.

Back when I carried an older 36 (no dash, flat latch), I shot standard pressure 158gr SWC for practice and carried +P LSWC-HP. In the course of 3 years, I probably fired 50 +P LSWC-HP without any problems. I did notice that both loads shot to the same POI. I've since given the gun to my brother with 2/3box of the LSWC-HP. The gun's fine and just as tight as it was when I bought it.

Shoot enough +P that you're familiar with POI and use standard pressure for practice.
