We are at the 2018 SHOT Show releasing new products this week.

For our Winchester brand, we're announcing Winchester WinClean® 244™!

Briefly, this is a ball powder developed for medium handgun loads.

It is ideally suited to 38 Special, 45 Auto, and 9mm standard loads. Consistency, low flash, and a broad range of applications make this powder a choice for any handgun cartridge loader. Since it is a ball powder, it features precise metering. And with the WinClean additive, this powder is cleaner burning and reduces copper fouling.

Available in 1 lb., 4 lb. and 8 lb. containers.

This powder is available nearly immediately, so look for it on retail stores in the next 30-60 days. More information, including a new launch video, to come soon.

I wonder how this compares to CFE Pistol? Did you hear any comments about comparisons between the two?

i wouldn't mind trying it. powders have been going on sale and selling fairly cheap for 8lb jugs lately at my local sportmans warehouse. did they have any load data available there at shotshow? I will be looking for this one.

Hodgdon already has quite a bit of data out for 244. It's in their 2018 reloading annual, and in their online database.

ETA: fxvr5, I was just typing that! You beat me to it!

Hodgdon sells powders labeled as Hodgdon and Winchester. I wonder if this is really a “new” powder or just selling an existing one under the Winchester label. Based on the wordin* of the announcement it seems like the later. So I suspect this was just a marketing opportunity to get press and discussion.

Personally I’d like to know what Hodgdon powder this is as it’s nice to shop both on price. In the case of Win 231/HP38 I’ve seen sizable difference in price with either brand being cheaper depending on the seller.

Just looking at the data for .45ACP/230grn, it looks like a fairly high pressure powder... equivalent loads to W231, WST, WSF and it's pushing almost 20000psi.

Looking at 9mm/40S&W/45ACP load data, 244 produces higher velocities with less or comparable powder charges than W231/HP-38.

My guess is Hodgdon wanted a powder that addressed the downsides of W231/HP-38 like lower velocities and temperature sensitivity to better appeal to match shooters.

Keep in mind Alliant recently released Sport Pistol for match shooters to compete with Titegroup/N320/W231/HP-38 and looks like Hodgdon is trying to do the same with this new powder.

IIRC, Hodgdon said they were looking at different powder/manufacturing process that was less involved and more cost effective than W231/HP-38 ... perhaps 244 is that powder.

Look forward to testing the new powder. Maybe it's the "new and improved" W231/HP-38. ;):D

19,900 is SAMMI max for .45 ACP. W-231 is fast/medium speed, WST is fast, and WSF is medium speed. So I do not understand what you are saying. They stop where they want or at SAMMI max.

I too am waiting for the release of the newer pistol powders from hodgdon, they have been showing data and advertising both their new pistol powders for a while now and the new hodgdon reloading manual has an article on them
I do hope they release them soon they have been advertising IMR unequal now since 2016 and win 244 for 6 months or so,
I called hodgdon 2 months ago and asked about IMR unequal they said they were hoping for a release around spring, close to 2 years after the load data appeared on their website, I will get some when they actually hit the shelf

Can't wait to try some!

There's the new Winchester 572 also......on the slow end ....reminded me of Unique until I saw the latest Hod. speed table.

I don't see this new 244 listed there yet.....wonder where it fits in speed-wise?

There's the new Winchester 572 also
that one came out a year or so ago , I bought a pound last year to try in my 40 s&w it did fine but I stuck with HS-6 for now , its funny how some areas
in the country get some new powders as soon as their released and some other powders take a year to hit the shelf , in my area seems like we get hodgdon stuff fairly quick and alliant not so much still no sport pistol on the shelf, and western powders is hit or miss, I see online retailers have IMR Unequal listed but not in stock but Win 244 is not listed yet

According to the Hodgdon burn rate chart W231 is #29, W244 is #31 and Unique is #32.

Unless Hodgdon is hiding the facto it's a duplicate powder which I doubt it looks like a new powder. With W231 & HP-38 all the data and numbers are identical, there is no such duplicate in their data for W244.

So many new powders and so little time to play lol...

It looks like W244 is filling the hole left when SR7625 was discontinued. (powder speed wise)

I wonder if this is another "replacement" powder for a powder they may discontinue down the line due to manufacturing costs. Seems some of our old favorites are expensive to make and particularly costly to dispose of the waste from the manufacture. Instead of passing those costs along and perhaps making that powder now undesirable, they are trying to wean us off them by tempting us with new powders that are touted to be easier to meter and cleaner burning. Problem is, I have so many #s of medium handgun powders, like Bullseye, Unigue, and W231/HP38, stocked up on since the last shortage, that I hate to buy another powder I mighte like more.........

I agree, I have a lot too although not as much as when the last shortage started of course. I just checked my records and I have a combined 24lbs of three powders, W231, HS-6 and W296. That doesn't count the other dozen or so labels I have but they are in much less quantity. It's hard to keep track where I have them stored to comply with local regulations lol. (a handful of different houses and buildings)

Well, we already had the W231 premature demise threads a few years ago.....maybe this IS the replacement. I've been a Unique fan for approaching 45 years....W231 was a competitor....well loved by many....but I never found it enough better than Unique for my needs to change my tried and true.....and no, I never concerned myself with "dirty" until these gun forums told me there was such a thing!;) The things I could be swayed by...might be less muzzle flash, or maybe even more accurate powder loads (although us Unique loaders never have had to worry about exactness with that very forgiving powder.)

On the other hand, Unique has a smooth recoil that faster powders just can't beat......I am pleased that ArchAngelCD found the speed, kindred...nestled right in between Unique & W231........I was looking at that chart just this morning.....blind I guess, cuz I didn't see W244.....and I was looking for it! (losing it?)

That's what I was thinking. I need to find a part time job that pays me to test all the different powders on the market in all the different calibers they have load data for.

With the existing powders there's a plethora of options out there. I can't imagine the market for new powders is very large. Do that many people actually care if a power can get 2% more velocity, or is 2% cleaner than old powders?
