I am so sick of this!! Here is the article that accompanied the release of names. :cuss:

Orange County Leads Area In Concealed Weapons Licenses

http://www.wftv.com/news/5272863/detail.html

LICENSEES BY COUNTY:
Brevard (2.85mb) | Lake (1.58mb)
Orange (3.66mb) | Osceola (942kb)
Seminole (1.56mb) | Volusia (2.61mb)

RESOURCE: Florida's Concealed Weapon Program

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. -- Next time you're out in a crowded place, take a look around. Chances are someone's carrying a handgun and you wouldn't know. Channel 9's Steve Barrett has uncovered just how common concealed weapons are in the places we all go.

It might be in a purse, or a pocket, a car, or a briefcase, and you have no way of knowing. In Central Florida, about one in 40 adults has a permit to pack hidden heat.

"I think it's mostly for safety, just knowing you have protection. Especially being a woman," said permit applicant Venus Gorospe.

"If I was put in that position, I would have something that says, 'Hey, I was certified. I was knowledgeable about using my weapon and I properly used it,'" said permit applicant Chaddrick Borders.

At Rieg's Shooting Range in Orlando, owners Eileen and John Rieg think anyone who owns a gun should have a permit to conceal it.

In fact, John Reig teaches a concealed firearms course twice a week. He and his wife are seeing an upswing in business, especially among women.

"People have been wanting to get trained. They want to know about responsible firearm ownership," Eileen said.

More than 55,000 Central Floridians are licensed to carry a concealed weapon. Orange County has the most, followed by Brevard and Volusia.

Orange County has 14,942; Brevard County is next with 11,527; Volusia County has 10,631; Lake County follows with 6,401; Seminole County has 6,330; Osceola County has 3,701; and Flagler County has 1,864.

That worries many people, especially now that Florida law allows the use of deadly force if someone feels their life or property is being threatened. Yet, statistics show violent crime actually decreased with Florida's right to conceal, depending on who you believe, anywhere from seven percent to 40 percent.

The Hogkinsons are tourists from Great Britain. Powerful guns are outlawed there, yet both wish they could carry.

"People who carry guns are not out there starting things. They're taking care of themselves in something somebody else starts," said Steven Hogkinson.

Concealed weapons aren't allowed in bars or other liquor licensed businesses. They can't be used to threaten others. In fact, they can't be visible at all.

Gun proponents say, while not knowing who's carrying may make some uneasy, it also makes criminals think twice.

Carrying a concealed weapon is considered a right in Florida. The license costs about $100. If you're 21, can shoot and have a clean record, chances are you qualify.

I did a number of searches and didn't see anything on this here on THR.

My thoughts

You could go either way on this one. Either the criminals are going to know who has guns and will steer clear, or they will know which houses to try and rob while their owners are gone.

What permit holder only has one gun?? I am sure there are some out there, but I have yet to meet one. If I was a criminal I would be canvassing some of these houses looking for houses that are empty during the day. I wish someone would post the names of all the people on welfare or all the people that have been pulled over for speeding. I think that would get a lot of people attention.

I downloaded the smallest one and several entries have only a P.O. box listed -- good planning! Floridians, whip your legislators and make CCW data private.

This scares me. In my county, it's public record who the CCW holders are. Anyone can just go in there and request a list.

I thought concealed meant concealed!

More likely the former. If they suspect only one gun, and the owner knows how to use it, they won't be around to possibly get caught in the house. Gun owners also have more of the common security devices around the house. They'll probably steer clear. (If they know what's good for them)

This is still crap, though.

Actually, maybe we should have a list of all the people we're supporting with our tax dollars.

I wonder how the leftist extremists would feel about publishing a list of all welfare recipients.

Outstanding idea.

i think we should look up the home address and telephone numbers of the reporters and "out" them. unfortunately, there are 13 listed and 4 unlisted entries for steve barrett at whitepages.com and i couldn't find any more information to go on. someone who lives in fl might be able to figure out which city he lives in and expand on that. reporters feel invulnerable but have no problem making other people feel exposed and helpless. it's time we gave them that same feeling of insecurity.

The media has absolutely no legitimate reason to make this info public. They are just anti-gun and using this as a thumb in the yeye to gun owners. Floridians should contact their state legislators to have the law amended to make this info confidential.

Either that or about 10,000 folks need to file invasion of privacy lawsuits and overwhelm them and their lawyers.

It's a shame that the names of permit holders were tacked on to that, because otherwise it was a pretty good story. Articulate folks talking about the benefits of carrying, statistics showing a drop in crime after concealed carry laws were passed, no portrayal of gun owners as violent rednecks.

Since there was no mention of the lists of names in the video, how much do you want to bet that the station directors added that to the website to counter what was a fairly pro-gun story?

I think the latter. Also, not every gun owner is a home-defense ninja that's ready to shoot-to-kill. I had some second thoughts this morning about encouraging my girlfriend to get her CCW.

Criminals can look at the list and see if their stalking victims will be able to shoot back or not. In Florida, they will have about 55 days to torment and harrass before the victim could potentially receive his or her license. That's plenty of time!

What next, listing anyone who has a safe in their home?
How about a list of addresses of families with children age 3-6? If you're going to help gun thieves, don't forget pedophiles too! Local news editors have no problem picking on us shady, second-class citizens, but their shock-journalism practices would change if children were involved.

Already done. I don't expect quick action because, naturally, police officers and public officials are allowed to keep their information restricted.

Pro Gun

It is public info already, you can argue that mebbe it shouldn't be, but was a pretty pro gun and self defense.

This is a sign of desperation. The antis are losing big and are now willing to do things that will alienate moderates. Revell in your victory!

Yes they are, and they're doing the same in Ohio through the papers and the internet. That's it, I've had enough. I'm signing up for a CCW course this weekend, and after I get my Ohio permit I'm sending off for a Florida one. They can shout my name from the rooftops if it pleases them.

Aside from the reprehensible posting of the lists, the article is actually pretty good.

Even the British tourists get it.

However if I lived there and was on one of those lists I'd do everything I could to get the addresses, phone numbers, and other public information about the news director and the on-air people at that station published publicly.

Hmmm - Might this have something to do with why your search of THR turned up empty?

Aside from the stupidity of publishing all the license holder names, it's really not an anti gun article at all. They even (vaguley) quote statistics that show a lowered crime rate since the new laws have taken affect.

Now - I wonder.

This is really hypthetical, and kind of out there. But lets' suppose that somewhere, an actual bad guy read the list that was attached to that article. And let's say, that bad guy actually knew somebody on the list.

Now - tonight bad guy needs dope, so he goes to rob the local Kwikee-mart. Inside, he sees the guy whose name he read in the paper and blows him away to make sure he stays uninvolved.

Will there be a civil case against the paper and the articles author?

If They Pulled That Crap In Texas

I guarantee the station(s) would be picketed 24/7..

Then full page rebuttle Newspaper Ads

Can't say it would never happen in Texas..but whoever tried it would be shooting themselves in both feet. Hell, White Tail Season alone generates Million$ in advertising revenue..kiss a big chunk of that Adios!

Take Care

OK, so the facts could be used as an argument for CCW, yet this article is 'outing' holders? The media blows my mind.

I'm not going to get revenge or punch my pillow in frustration over this. Instead, I'm going to buy a new gun and take 3 new shooters to the range before the end of the year.

The advertisements on the local station for the report were misleading, too: "Is the person next to YOU carrying a GUN?! Tune in at 6 to find out!" It's like the marketing team and web team didn't get the memo that concealed carry is okay now.

Not only is my info right there, with an uncommon name there is no mistaking where I'm at. I just hope these hacks meet with the distress they are hoping to bring on the quiet hardworking decent people on these lists. These are the same nitwits that draw attention to "easy to make bombs with common chemicals under your sink. Film at 11". Jackasses. Joe:cuss:
