In the early 1970s when I was about 15 years old I found a Model 94 used for sale at Woolco and put it on layaway. When I got it paid off my father picked it up and we took it home. It was marked "Property of UMWUA" which is the United Mine Workers Union of America. It took a few years to learn how historic this rifle was. In the late 1800s and early 1900s the states of Kentucky, Pennsylvania and particularly Ohio had a very bad reputation for sending in State Militia to kill striking miners. The UMWUA having grown tired of this purchased 200 Model 94s which they would deploy to the strikes. The Militiamen, armed mainly with Trapdoor Springfield rifles, now being seriously outgunned, lost their appetite for killing miners. Years later the union, having no more need for them sold them and I got one. I sold it two years ago for an astronomical profit. This was a true Appalachian Assault Rifle.
By the way Walkalong, I am pretty sure Appalachian hillbillies would put spare ammo in their overhauls pockets, not their jeans pockets.
