I am about to order some more bullets for my AR and have done a fair amount of reading. a lot of people shoot 55g FMJ from hornady, xtreme and others. the xtreme are the best price per round i can find.

i've also read that the hornady 55g sp are generall more accurate then their 55g FMJBT.

is there any benefit in FMJ over the spire points? from powder valley both are $50 for 500

im plinking and punching paper and the like

thanks

No advantage, except they are generally cheaper for plinking.

But almost any soft-point of equal price will be more accurate.

It's due to the hole in the jacket being in the nose, rather then the base.

Much easier to make a perfectly flat base if it doesn't have the jacket opening in it.

The boat tail on those FMJ bullets will make for faster/easier reloading. If you are shooting free hand it is hard to notice a difference between a 1 moa load and a 4 moa load.

I like PVI but Midsouth has a better deal on bullets right now. After buying 1k of their 55gr SP it looks thier they are just branding Hornadys 55gr SP w/c. I'll be shooting some test groups tomorrow, I'll update this thread if they perform the same if you are interested.

The only advantage of FMJ is price. Any decent HP or SP will out shoot them.

Like rcmodel said, it's all about the base.

The squareness of the base of the bullet and the concentricity of the jacket are the two most important things for accuracy.

I have only ever had one rifle that shot well with FMJs, many shoot well with SP bullets especially Sierra bullets they are magic, Hornady bullets are hit or miss, not as uniform as Sierra or Speer but generally accurate in spite of that. I don't reload much .22 cal, only a 22-250 Browning BLR it shoots about the same with both 40gr V-MAX and 55gr SGKs around 3/4 MOA with H380 and RL15.

Nwcityguy2 I am very interested in your range report. I knew there was a vendor I had forgotten about. Thanks for the link.

Thanks to all for the info. In am punching paper to retain my marginal skill with an m4 like platform and am not better life, limb, dinner or anything else on the bullets. But I am very value minded

I used to buy military pulls by the 50 CAL ammo can full for paper punching but they were never as accurate as a SP or FMJ style from any maker. Less accuracy was fine for me if only shooting at filled soda bottles at 50-75 YDS at the local pit/range but for serious hunting the accuracy gained by a better bullet was well worth the added price IMHO.

They are definatly the same bullet. They look the same, same accuracy and same point of impact. Right when I opened the box I said to myself, these look like Hornady bullets. For $8.20 per hundred with the ability to buy only 500 at a time, they are an amazing deal. I used to buy them bulk from Grafs but I would have to order 2k for the best price which still isn't as good.

Thanks for the range report. I think I am going to order some today
