I have a friend that picked up a Super Redhawk in .480 Ruger. He bought some 325 grain XTP's and is looking for a target/hunting load would be my assumption.

He was hoping to use HS-7/Winchester 571 powder that he has a pound of. I was only able to find a load for a lighter bullet like 270 grain using HS-7. Since the .480 Ruger came out in 2003 and Win 571 is a now discontinued powder, I wonder if that has something to do with limited load data.

I know the obvious choice would be H110/W296 for me, but I want to hear what you guys have to say.

Any suggestions?

I don't load for that particular hand cannon, but I do load for a few other mag big bore wheel gun cartridges, and can't seem to find a powder that satisfies me as well as 296.
But Longshot is an option, Tite Group, H4227, Lil Gun, a few others I'm sure. But I didn't see any data for HS7, probably too fast burning for that cartridge and jacketed bullet combination. I also didn't see anything with 571.

GS, I think you like Longshot as much as I like HS-6.

To the OP, any powder suited to load other "magnum" cartridges will do very well in the 480 Ruger too. The 454 Casull and the 480 Ruger seem to be close in performance if that helps. I don't load for the 480 Ruger either and unfortunately I have never shot one.

That link is to Handloads.com. They have data for the 480 Ruger with a 275gr Speer GD-HP bullet and HS-7, just what you're looking for. They list 18.0gr to 20.0gr as the charge rate but always check data for yourself.

Ya ArchAngelCD, I do like my Longshot a lot. But I also like HS6 almost as much, it's a great powder, and use quite a lot of it!
