I am making a trip from Western Kentucky to Tampa, FL in a week and a half and I was wondering if there were any notable places to stop in between that offer some nice opportunities to fondle C&R guns....or any guns for that matter. :)

Any places that offer good deals where you can walk in? Or ammo deals that are that much better if you pick them up in person? I am looking for most of the standard calibers. .223, .45, 9mm. Maybe some .303, 7.62x39?

TIA for the help. I'm hoping there are some interesting stops on the way for gun enthusiasts. I'm also interested in Civil War sites, etc. My girlfriend, who is awesome btw, already wants to stop at Lookout Mountain in Chattanooga, TN.

I'm pumped!! Especially because I am going to pick up a brand spankin' new Ram w/a Hemi!!! (...and I have been vehicle-less for the past year because I have had so many surgeries after the accident:banghead:).

Well, It may be out of your way a little bit... But Buds Gun Shop is in Lexington, and Centerfire Systems is in Versailles. Both are great places but in central KY. Depending on your route, I'd say they are worth stopping by.

per C&R shop- a little out of the way, but an excellent shop, Brock's in Bostwick, GA. Most of what he carries is the mid-upper end collectibles. Downside- you must call in advance and set an appointment. (This started when he had to lay off his hired help due to the slowing economy.)

He (Hugh Brock) is very (VERY) knowledgible in military weapons and militaria in general.

per WoNA sites
-Stones River National Battlefield- Murfreesboro, TN (25 min. SE of Nashville)
-a lot of the I-75 corridor from N. GA to Macon (google Georgia Civil War Sites to find out more. Too many to post here.) Chickamauga, Resaca, Dug Gap; some bigger than others.
-One of the biggest in GA would be Kennesaw Mtn. National Battlefield.
-And of course ATL.- the Cyclorama (Grant Park in ATL (I-20 just a few miles east of I75/85)) is worth seeing.

Whittaker Guns in Owensboro has a good assortment of firearms. Don' ask me where Owensboro is, I order out of state by phone. ;) And there's a Shoot Straight in Tampa; I'm not a fan of the chain, but others seem to like them. Bass Pro and Gander Mountain also have stores in Florida. OK places to fondle, but pricing is usually better online.

Civil War battle in Florida

It may be out of the way for you, but there is a battle that took place in Florida, February 1864. It's called Olustee. It's about an hour and a half west of Jacksonville, on I-10. This is a site where roughly 5,000 men of the Union met up with roughly the same number of Confederates. And it was one of the worst defeats for the Union in percentage of men committed to the fight against the numbers lost. It's a small site, as far as museums/markers, etc goes, but it's something that not a lot of people know about, and worth a trip.

My bad - you're coming from WESTERN KENTUCKY. I-75. Not sure of the distance east of I-75. Lake City is the nearest major marker if traveling east on I-10, after getting off I-75.
I'm so used to giving instructions from Saint Augustine.....

In Lexington, KY we have Bud's, Antique & Modern Firearms, Evan's Arms & Archery, Classic Arms and Archery (all worth checking into) and 25 minutes North in Paris is the original Bud's (now owned & operated by a different outfit). I recommend any/all of these to people interested in used guns. There are some other shops around, but these generally have a bigger selection of used guns than anybody else around.

Try ANY pawn shop, since most have C&R guns. Here in FL, where we have a LARGE population over 70, older guns show up all the time between gun shops, garage sales. etc.....
