I am heading out to the desert for a good ol plinking session. I have the usual things to destroy (bowling pins, cinder blocks, milk jugs, etc..). So I guess my question to all THRers out there is: what do you shoot at? I will be shooting an SKS, Winchester 30/30, Mossberg 12gauge, a 9mm, a couple of .40's, and a mini 14. Any homemade ideas? Thanks in advance

Jason

If you just want to blast things, vegetables like tomatoes and watermelons and so on will explode nicely. Jugs or balloons full of water are also nice reactice targets -- a little water color will make them more spectacular.

Cookies hung from a branch with tape make nice targets. Ordinary paper plates are good, but don't "explode."

fruit for nice explosions, I have a personal vendeta against Erickson cell phones and I shoot as many as I can find. I shoot at a range now that only uses target stands and paper targets but I used to shoot at those things plus old snuff cans and lollypops. I know its illegal (maybe) but pennys and dimes. They look cool with a nice centered hole in them, If you can find them.

Go to your cheapest mass retail store and buy a couple of cases of really cheap soda. So refreshing to catch a can and watch it burst! Don't forget a trash bag for packing the splatter out. :)

big fruit like watermelons or pumpkins work..I like to get some orange posterboard at the local hobby place and cut it into 4" diameter triangles and hang them from strings then step back a-ways and evaluate the bullet drop and accuracy.apples on a stick stuck in the ground.lotsa stuff.

watch shooting at cinder blocks or hard surfaces.those pieces can come back and get you.

Clays and golfballs make good reactive targets. Cheap soda in cans, too. Shake the cans like crazy before you set them up-they'll 'splode better. :D

Hard disks. Check lawyer's offices, etc. for data they need to destroy. Return them with holes punched in them.

"Just try and do data recovery on this."

Moving targets like lose balloons are good,if the ground surface is right and a rolling tire, or one tired to a tree and swinging with plywood target in the center... I only shoot non- moving targets at distances....100 yard+

I save up all of the CD's that everyone sends me. I have probably 100 AOL, various catalogs, etc., cd's.
Hang them on a string, or just stick them in a crack in the ground, they make great targets.
Fruit and vegtables are my favorites though.

There's nothing like explosive targets. We were shooting full-auto in the desert when these guys showed up with old computer monitors, freon tanks and a box of homemade explosive targets made with flash powder. He'd stick those on the monitors and tanks and we had a great time hitting them and hearing the "BOOM!". :D

Tannerite!
second choice, propane bottles next to lit road flares.
third choice, gasoline in the milk jugs, and shoot with a tracer.

Poly drum full of Tannerite. I say a fifty cal at about 300 yrds. MMMuuuurrrrhahahahaha

Here in Indiana I shoot more traditional targets; paper, steel, bowling pins, clay...but hopefully everyone that is bringing garbage to shoot takes it out with them. Junk left shot up reflects badly on all of us that shoot for sport...so carry your junk out!

You can get a roll of Neco wafers for the price of a candy bar. They are about 1 inch in diameter and a roll has maybe 100 of them. Plus you can let the birds clean them up. Come to think of it, crackers, saltine or Ritz, would also be good. Bigger too.

where do ya'll get bowling pins from? Maybe I should go to local bowling alleys and see if I can buy the old used ones for cheap...

These are all excellant ideas, I especially like the aol disk idea and the tomato juice. I am writing a "shopping" list for these items as we speak! Thanks to everyone for the ideas, Ill let you all know how it went on Monday.

And to Ruger270man, I get my bowling pins from Turners Outdoorsman. They got em for 2 bucks a pop. (they are durable as heck!)

I found out (accidently) that cinderblocks in a box (to contain flying pieces at close range) put off quite a cloud of material. Almost looks like a smoke gernade going off.

Keep the "KISS" principal in mind, for the price and clean-up plus low
cost. If you mount hang or drive a stake in somewhere, a Stack of "CHEAP"
paper plates is your most practical and is about the same size as the KILL
ZONE on most commercial targets.

My thoughts exactly. Fruits and vegetables are at least biodegradable, although I suppose a purist could argue that leaving a bunch of garbage in the desert messes up the ecology. Picking up bits and pieces of concrete blocks and old CDs is time consuming and almost impossible to do a thorough job of, but the only responsible thing to do is pack out whatever you packed in.

Tread Lightly!

Every fall we shoot hedgeapples. Great to see one "burst" when hit with soft point .223 or something like that. cheap, and the squirrels will clean up the after effects.
