is it just me, or is the 7x57 a hunter's dream? Not too fast, not too slow, not too powerful, not too weak. It is used for deer, bear, elk, moose and on the battlefield. From what I hear, it fits into some short action rifles. If you handload your ammo, this is one caliber that can do it all. Anyone have any pictures of one of these in a hunting rifle or have any experience hunting with one?

I have been a big fan of the 7x57 for about 30 years. A number of 7x57s have passed by including a Model 98 built as a total custom from a surplus action (sold it to my best friend a few years ago). Here are the ones I currently own.

I love mine, VZ24 action, 24" Douglass XX barrel, Timney trigger, B&C stock and a Seeadler 6X scope with German post reticle. My barrel is marked .275 Rigby, but it's just a 7x57 of course.

7x57 and 6.5 x 55, great calibers, low recoil anyone can shoot thus making people a better shot, great for kids women and even us old guys that are tired of recoil, you hear lots about the magnums, short magnums, ultra mags etc, most people that own and hunt with these usually are flinching when they pull the trigger.

I have a Ruger 77 in 7x57 with a 8x Schmidt & Bender. I love this rifle. I have
shot enough deer with this rifle to fill a boxcar. I bought it new in about 1987.

This is a 1989 Zastava Barreled action, Fajen walnut 'Rebel' stock, Redfied SR bases, Nikon Prostaff 2-7x32 scope.

+1 on the M77. I picked one up earlier this year (for $300.00!) It's a jewel. Mounted a Nikon on mine. It's fairly accurate with the heavier bullets, but tightens in with lighter bullets. I'm still working on an MOA load.

How much difference is there in the 7x57 and the 7mm? How abot the 8mm mauser. I just picked a k98 up and am wondering what to do with it to make it a decent hunting rifle.

If by 7mm you mean 7mm Mauser. It is the same cartridge. The 8mm is a bit larger and a bit more powerful. The 7x57 is .284'' in diameter and the 8x57mm is .323'' in diameter

A Bold Trigger really improved the performance on my Vz24; shrunk the groups by half..."drop in," with 5 minutes of inletting with a little chisel. I also put a 2-7x scout scope on the rear-sight base, because the ladder started at 300M; most deer here are seen within 50M. Scout scopes allow for the use of stripper clips.

If you mean difference between the 7mm Rem Mag and the 7x57 then the 7x57 is closer to the 7mm-08...maybe between the 7mm-08 and the .280 REM.

I'd say the opposite, ie. 7mm-08 is loaded hotter than even the hot european 7x57 loads by about 100fps or so. So, 7x57<7mm-08<.280Rem, with about 100-150fps difference between each.

From the factory maybe...but for handloaders, the 7x57 has more case capacity.

7mm-08 is around 52 grains of water
7x57 about 55 grains of water
.280 about 68 grains of water
7mm mag about 83 grains of water

Really? I have a bunch of European 7x57 stuff loaded with 139 grain FMJ BTs (appears military) that clocks an amazingly consistent 2925 FPS. The 7/08 tops 3,000 FPS?

First rifle is a stock Turk with a Bsquare scout mount.

The second is a Yugo is a drop in Boyd stock, S&K scout mount.

I recommend Sellier & Bellot 196 grain SPCE hunting ammo.

Second one down In this pile the 7mm is the 1934 Brazilian short rifle. A very sweet shooter with my stash of old Kynock 7x57. I also have a 7mm Rolling block 1905 and a Winchester 1895 in 7mm which is supposed to be factory but they were never listed.

Works great!

pale horse: What's your scope on the S&K mount? How's that setup working? Thanks!

It is an older, Korean made Simmons Prohunter Pistol, 2x, ~9.5" eye relief. Works great, especially on the Turk (same scope, different bases on the guns) which had a more suitable length of pull than the sporter stocked Yugo.

Simmons no longer makes that eye relief any more. All are spec'ed at 20".

Well, I'll agree that the 7mm-08 and 7x57 are very similar, and that is excellent performance from your 7x57 (and I suspect the best you got out of it), but that is not typical performance for the 7x57, even for the european loads. Standard performance from factory loads, including european, is 2600-2700fps for the 140gr in the 7x57 and 2850 or so from the 7mm-08. So, unless you are hot-rodding the 7x57, the 7mm-08 is faster by a fair margin.

which is kinda hard to believe because in the 6mm size, the 6mm rem is a bit hotter than the .243 win, which both derive from the same cases as the 7x57 and the 7-08. I agree that the 7-08 is a little better ballistically based on what I read, but who knows what the numbers would show if as many loads were available for the 7x57 as the 7-08?
