Any S&W .460 owners?

Hey guys,

Decided to order something bigger than what I usually use for fun at the range and opted for S&W .460
14" barrel model.


I'm sure plenty here have a .460 any comments as to the quality, accuracy, durability etc of the pistol?
Any little tricks or catches to look out for?
Would love to hear from anyone with the 14" model.

Top of the line. Well, maybe Korth or Freedom Arms is higher quality...but they don't make a .460. I can quibble with the stupid key lock, but otherwise, no problems.

I own a much different .460: 3.5 inch barrel with muzzle brake.

The .460 is a very accurate platform. It is a caliber that really shines when handloaded for. Never shoot your .460 without some form of good hearing protection and don't allow folks around you when you shoot, not to wear protection also. The power of the .460 is such, that for most applications, one does not need to shoot "hot" loads. Standard loadings are already "hot" enough. In many applications, downloaded ammo is still accurate and has more power than necessary to do the job.

I only have the 12" Bbl. No compensator Just a heavy duty Bbl with the gain twist. Awesome, accurate gun. I struggled a bit getting my Leupold scope to stop moving but now that I have that it is great.

I also have the 12" Performance Center model. I put a Leupold 2.5x8 scope on it. I have not fired the gun yet so I have no advice. It sure is an awesome looking gun though.

My dad and I have one of the 12" guns. Its a hoot to shoot. Was dialing in the scope at 50yards. 45LC was all over the place for us, but the 460 round was same hole all day long. Well until we ran out of ammo. Pricey day. Enjoy it!!

I have a 460 with a 5" bbl. I love the gun. It's accurate as hell, built like a tank, and Mother's Mag Polish shines it up real nice. Enjoy.

Watch out for the blast from the cylinder gap, it cut my bench bag open and threw rice 2 stations over. I bet it would cut a finger to the bone.

I would advise against running super hot light loads because of the flame cutting. Similar problem with the 357 maximum. Except for the factory loads, stick with a slightly heavier bullet. I'd say around 240-250gr. As you can see from the picture the shock and awe factor is insane! I've broke a lot of my plastic reloading trays, blew a water bottle in half that was sitting next to me, cut a hole in the range bag, and once blew a cheeseburger all over the stall that I had just picked up for lunch. Guys from the rifle range come down to see what the hell you are doing. I blew a guys hat off in the next stall over. He was not very happy. Although, I did say politely "fire in the hole" before hand. He just gave me a dirty annoyed look.

That being said, I've had to have the frame replaced on mine and when they sent it back it was not at all dialed in. Could not move the sights over enough to get it on paper. Haven't sent it back in yet. Haven't shot it since. Still love it though. Recoil isn't that bad. The wife shot it a couple of times. My 500 by Magnum Research is MUCH more punishing. Hope you enjoy the fireball.
