A friend of ours in moving to Dallas soon and we were wondering if the city has any, "strange", ordinances which differ from Texas state laws, (as in many other large cities). We're from "Ill Annoys" where the house across the street may be covered by different ordinances than you are!

Any information would be appreciated.

There shouldn't be. Texas has preemption, which prevents localities from enforcing any laws that are more restrictive then state law.

Nope - never heard of any of the cities around here which have any unusual ordinances.

The Texas Legislature usually takes a real dim view of local authorities doing whatever they want and isn't hesitant to spank them. That's why we don't have situations like in SF of Philly where the city tries to thumb it's nose at the State.

Not that I'm aware of... However, I avoid the City of Dallas and Dallas County as much as possible (rude people, bad traffic, more crime, etc). The Fort Worth/Tarrant County side is much more agreeable. :D

No, just be aware the Dallas taxes will kill them before the crime rate does.

As the t-shirt sold in a local Ft Worth BBQ establishment says, "Life's Too Short to Live In Dallas"

True for firearms, careful with knives. Reference the San Antonio knife ordinances for an example.
Kinda stupid, but locking blades are illegal there.

Dallas is atypical of most big cities. It tends to be pretty conservative like the rest of the state. They've wanted to pass some stricter stuff in Dallas, but it never works. We Texans love our guns. Even in the 4th largest market in the nation.

About the only things Texas cities seem to get their way with is to annex every square mile they can get their hands on regardless of actually giving any city services, and getting bond issues for stuff like building sports stadiums.

Good point, I was specifically referencing firearms.

Be wary, they call it barbeque, but know up front they are going to serve you beef brisket. chopped or sliced, its from a cow.

A half days travel will get you back to bbq heaven in Memphis.

(I'm moving to Dallas in August, and have been checking on laws/statutes and everything is generally statewide per my research. And ignore the FW-fan up there, the folks in Dallas were plenty friendly - just wear your cowboy boots and you'll fit right in. You do have boots, don't you?)

It's not the people it's the Dallas politics. If you plan to own a home or a business, or any real property for that matter, stay out of Dallas county and Dallas city limits. The taxes are much higher there and you'll find things harder to get done; zoning, building permits, just everything.

It's twice as hard to do business in Dallas as anywhere else in the D/FW Metroplex.

If you have kids watch the schools too, Dallas school district can be a train wreck.

If pork was good, why do they disguise it with vinegar? Oh, pork ribs are good, but for meat, it's barbequed brisket or barbacoa - and no, that last isn't brisket.
