Since I have picked up a 6" S&W model 17 and run a bunch of rounds through it on a regular basis, my overall revolver shooting has improved a good deal. I really like this revolver and can whack steel plates at 25 yds with it now. I feel like I have dramatically improved as a shooter since spending a lot of quality time with my 22lr.

A few weeks ago, I saw my first IDPA match and it looked like a great deal of fun. I want to give it a shot next time it comes around at the end of the month. I have a 3" model 65 and a 4" model 67 as my main shooters.

Would there be any benefit to me trying to find a 4" model 18 over my current revolver? I know it would more closely mimic my primary shooters in size and weight, but the 6" is really accurate and really helps with my confidence. Any input is appreciated.

Owning a Model 18 is a benefit in itself. I have one and will never get rid of it.

Spending the money on ammo and practicing more might work just as well.

I love my Model 18 and it would be one of the very last of mine guns that I would get rid of.

The main advantage to adding a 18 would be if you practiced drawing and firing if you were going to shoot the 13 or 67 for IDPA. The 18 and 67 are Yin/Yang.

I bought my 18 as an understudy gun when I was carrying 686 or a 67 a lot, and most of the rounds that I fired out of it the first couple years that I had it were drawing and firing from a holster. Made me into a pretty decent point shooter as well.

BTW, I own a Model 17 and I have noticed the same thing as you ... quality time with a sweet 22 really does improve your shooting abilities. I always try to "warm up" and "cool down" with my 17. I find the "cool down" period after shooting the more powerful calibers is good for getting rid of any flinching I may have picked up, that way I end with a good technique.

As for the 18, well, you can't have too many guns, especially classic S&W steel!

I love my Model 18. I am constantly looking for the right deal on a Model 17. S&W .22 revolvers are sweet.
