Anybody else live in a rough city?

I live near Cleveland.

The best advice I can give you is act like you belong there.

If you act like a victim, you will get to play that part.

I wouldn't say I live in a rough area, but it's not good. My vehicle has been broken into twice since I moved here (November) and the first time was February. So, twice in 6 months. I see a lot of vehicles broken into. and some little punk kid tried to steal my wife's purse, while I was there. Unfortunately, I wasn't carrying(because it's "Illegal" here.) But, I feel like, if they are breaking into cars, and trying to steal purses, it's only a matter of time.

There are few neighbourhoods that *aren't* rough, where I come from. When you get used to people literally blowing up ATMs, you know you're a bit jaded.

Reference link >>
So far in 2008, 290 ATMs were bombed in Gauteng, compared to 12 in 2005 and 54 the following year.

That article is from a month ago, and references the number of ATM bombings in just one of our nine provinces. The one that I happen to live in. Welcome to the war zone...

I work in some pretty rough areas daily. I don't run into much trouble, first reason because I work for the phone company, so everyone knows I have a reason to be there, and they all want their phones to work. The second reason, I believe, is how I carry myself. I treat people with respect, but at the same time I have no warm fuzzy illusions about the fact that there are people who are not good people walking around.
Carry yourself confidently, be aware of your surroundings, treat people with respect without being over-friendly or trusting of strangers. Any time an unknown person approaches you, always consider the possibility that they may be up to no good. I think that an aware, respectful, confident attitude will go a long way to projecting an image that you are not a sheep to the wolves, and the respectful attitude will help to avoid pi$$ing off the wrong person. It's hard to describe what I am talking about, because too far in either direction can cause problems. One direction is the afraid, easy target, and the other direction is the angry guy who thinks everyone around him is a criminal, which can cause anger directed at you.

It's getting rougher and rougher here. Why only last week someone dropped a cigarette butt.

Fred.

Jacksonville is a rough place, but I live in a nice area.

What part of Jax? I lived just north of Atlantic Blvd off Kernan Rd. Just up Monument Rd. from the Regency Square Mall when I was stationed at Mayport.

I've lived in plenty of bad neighborhoods and they all had one thing in common. Perhaps my experiences have been unusual. But I don't think so.
Then perhaps it's something this culture did and does that creates this "condition".
If we retrace our steps I bet we'll find the answer...Whaduya think!
If we don't fix it ........it'll only get worse.
I'm aware of areas which are cleaning up their act through economic inclusion.
Most people deep down want the same things!

Logical error #26: Disregarding repeated experience.

I wasn't going to comment, but now I have to...

This has gotten old. Regardless of any inequities in the past, decades have passed, and there are ample opportunies to rise above current conditions. At some point, it became a choice. And at that point victimism SHOULD have ended. Blaming society for individual choices has gotten old.

So is it "good and bad" neighborhoods based on color...white and black?
I think there's a word for this "kinda" of nonsense!

CRITGIT

Logical error #27:

Attempting to force realities to fit your agenda. I wonder... what color is the sky in that world you live in?

Greed caused it and society condoned it! The ultimate in man's inhumanity to man in the so called christian nation:eek:....It'll take lots of effort now to correct it. Otherwise we're just doomed to more and more of the same.
It's a problem that we created and we can remedy. National denial is a disaster in the making. Watch!
Sorry, but we're not "gunna" shoot our way "outta" this one! We already have the record for most % of incarcerated. How's that workin' out? Hmmm?
Were payin' for someone else's thrills now!

Yes I live in a ghetto, but I was raised in one so most of the time its just part of my life, except when that ghetto turns on me and I start to notice again that its bad to live here. South Phoenix, AZ

Greed and hate still cause it.

I don't make excuses for criminals, nor do I empathize with them.

When I had a 7th grade student TODAY explain to me that you need to wear a vest when breaking into a home because the owner may have a gun, I find myself short on understanding.

The ultimate in man's inhumanity to man in the so called christian nation....It'll take lots of effort now to correct it.

Has been corrected. For a while now. You know it and so do I.

Otherwise we're just doomed to more and more of the same.

We've ALWAYS had the same. Human nature has yet to be socialized out of people. People will always choose to act selfishly and prey on others.

It's a problem that we created and we can remedy.

No. We didn't create it and we can't remedy it.

National denial is a disaster in the making. Watch!

Escalation is a function of materialism and lack of teaching of ethics and morals in the home. Period.

Broken record.

Castle doctrine is making in-roads, but its slower than I'd like. Its a work in progress. Slowly, criminals will begin to re-learn that preying on others CAN be a dangerous proposition with little in the way of a retirement plan.

Were payin' for someone else's thrills now!

Huh?

It would be working out a whole lot better if people would get off their asses and lobby for a workable death penalty. "Prison reform" has gone a long way to make sure it's a better life in prison for some. Answer? Death, plain and simple.

Parts of Seattle are rough. I used to work in the Rainier district driving a truck. Sometimes we would come to work in the morning and find a bunch of bullet holes in our trucks. Sometimes they shot at us in broad daylight while we were driving.

I also worked the graveyard shift and we would have to walk to our cars in groups because many employees got mugged. Not me though. I hate it when strangers try to approach me, especially at night.

For the most part I think Seattle is a nice city. We would like to forget that whole WTO incident though.

If you have lived a sheltered life I think the you do yourself a favor by learning as much as you can about the darkside of humanity. Be it through books, a school course, and to a lesser degree the movies.
It boils down to the inner angry (substance abusers); the 'lost' gone the wrong way; the ignorant and hopelessly 'stuck'; and the sex deviants.
