Does anybody own one of these, in either carbine or rifle length? For $299, seems like good, cheap fun. And I think they look better than most of the 37mm/40mm launchers I've seen out there.

Is it required to be registered as a DD if you plan on using one of the .22lr "Beehive" adapters with it?

it wopuldn't be a DD, as it isn't rifled, as far as i know. Can you get a behive adapter for it? i looked at it a short while ago, and couldn't find one.

If you do get a 40mm you should be able to find a beehive. I doubt it would be cheap though. Probably easier to get buckshot rounds.

I live in Michigan=No Destructive Devices

37mm is not a destructive device, its a flare gun. Not even covered by the 68 GCA, not a firearm at all.

Some ammo you might find out there may be subject to some regulation but the launchers themselves are not.

40mm is DD.

Be careful of the 12 gauge adapters.

There are a number of threads on here about the illegality of them.

I think if you have one, you also have the same thing as an illegally sawed off shotgun (SBS). If I remember correctly this also applies to the rimfire adaptors. Be careful not to turn you flare launcher into something regulated by the atf and requires a tax stamp. It is as easy as inserting (may even just possessing it and the launcher) that adapter, and 10 years and $10K if caught should not be taken lightly.

Texas Riflemans suggestion checking out http://37mm.com/ is a good one, read the FAQ's.

http://37mm.com/FAQ/ Question 1 addresses this issue.

i was inferring the 37mm is something a weekend internet warrior gets on his rifle to make it look like an M203

and it's just my opinion, I didn't mean that in an offensive way.

That's a pretty ignorant statement. What ever happened to minding your own damn business and letting others buy whatever the hell they want?

guess you didn't read my entire post, besides opinions vary and mine isn't the only one. It wasn't my intention to offend or start a posting war.

Well, excuse them for not wanting to go for a form 1, tax stamp, ATF muddling, and pay out the nose for ammunition but still wanting to have a functional launcher on their AR platform.

Besides, I for one think it'd be nifty if I had a CAR-type AR rather than a Mid-length, and if I wanted to use flares. That, and it'd give anti's the heebie-jeebies knowing that there are still things you can legally own that just friggen look cool in the firearms world

there's some truth there!

Rifiling has nothing to do with DD's. There are many DD's out there that never had any rifling. I made and registered both my non-rifled DD, and my M203.

Must say those Spike 37mm's do look cool! Almost anything would be better than the Cobray 37mm's... :barf:

Keep in mind you lose a lot of velocity with conventional ammo as you shorten the barrel on 37mm/40mm GL's.

If you read 18 USC 921(a)(4), which is the main Federal definition of "Destructive Device", there is no mention of rifling whatsoever.

You may be thinking of the exemption for shotguns and shotgun ammo from DD classification, since the definition of "shotgun" at 18 USC 921(a)(5) requires a smooth bore.

But consider other DD's: grenades, flashbangs, Molotov cocktails, and modern smooth-bore cannon. The 120mm (smoothbore) gun in an Abrams tank, or the 73mm, 115mm, and 125mm Eastern-bloc guns (smoothbores), would undoubtably be Destructive Devices. So is my (smoothbore) 81mm mortar.

You are correct that there are some exemptions on a case-by-case basis.

I did not say that ALL DDs must be rifled barrels, just that any RIFLE/barreled thing over .50 is a DD. the 37mm launcher is not a DD because it is not rifled.

Again, rifled or not doesn't matter.

From the Federal laws, this time from 26 USC 5845(f) (the NFA), which has essentially the same definition as 18 USC 921 (the GCA) that I mentioned above:

2) any type of weapon by whatever name known which will, or
may be readily converted to, expel a projectile by the
action of a explosive or other propellant, the barrel or
barrels of which have a bore of more than one-half inch in
diameter, except a shotgun or shotgun shell which the
Secretary or his delegate finds is generally recognized as
particularly suitable for sporting purposes; and

Look up the entire text of either section of the law and read the applicable parts in their entirity before replying again. Then we'll literally be "on the same page".

the 37mm launcher is not a DD because it is not rifled.

No, it's not a DD because it's not a weapon. If you use it as a weapon to shoot dangerous things, then it becomes a DD by its usage alone.

Reference my previous post where I've provided several examples of things that have a bore of over one-half inch, are not rifled, and yet *are* DD's. The only difference between them and the 37mm flare launchers is that they are wepaons designed to shoot dangerous things.

While it may look cool, a 37mm launcher really just adds heft and weight to the AR better spent on other things. If you want/need a flare gun, get one - it'll be lighter, smaller, and easier to use.

A 40mm at least gives you the beehives at a reasonable price (and reasonable price is relative when dealing with that type of ordnance) and lets you use mil-issue stuff when zombie invasions come.

That and I've never seen a 37 in person that wasn't a piece of junk, and using a toy with a big bore that my hand has to be on top of isn't high on my personal safe/cool list.
