Guy locally (vermont) does a class and i can get a non resident Utah permit. Has anyone else gone this route? Ideas, suggestions? Vermont has no concealed carry permit therefore has no sister states. Apparently with Utah i can carry in like 35 other states...... except all the states surrounding VT lol :banghead:

I'd say go for it. I have a UT and KS. I got the Utah about 5 years ago to pick up a few more states that didn't recognize the KS permit at the time. Those states now honor KS, but I'm keeping the Utah as it's a cheap renewal.

Yes. It is very handy, if you travel to the states which will recognize it. Aside from the cost, there's not much reason not to do it.

I took one class and got Utah, Florida, and Arizona permits. They have a lot of overlap, but since reciprocity changes are not uncommon you should have more than one. You don't want to travel to a state where they have cancelled reciprocity unknown to you.

The reason I got the Arizona permit was because it covered Nevada where FrontSite is located. A few weeks after I received it in the mail, Nevada discontinued reciprocity with Arizona. The other two don't cover NV. My wife is from Pennsylvania and I have business there two or three times a year. Both FL and UT covered it until PA discontinued accepting FL out-of-state permits. As a result I want to get a PA permit which I'm told costs $20 and can be done by mail. I would suggest that if there's a state that you visit frequently, make sure you have two permits that will cover it or get an out-of-state permit from the state you visit frequently.

Yep I have one and it was simple and cheap. Main thing I got from the class was don't carry in LDS churches. :scrutiny:

Wife and I have Utah and Florida non-resident...soon to add the WV resident :D
Definitely worth the time and cost IF you plan to travel through the states that recognize it. IMHO.

No. PA stopped permits by mail March 2011. You have to apply in person for a non resident now. But they will mail the permit to you if it's not ready before you leave. Not sure about renewals.

Here's the ironic part. It's only in UTAH you can't carry in an LDS church. If you're in AZ you can. :)

I got the following from handgunlaw.us, I took out the states that require the permit holder to be a resident of Utah.

AK, AL, AR, AZ, DE, GA, IA, ID, IN, KS, KY, LA, MN, MO, MS, MT, NC, ND, NE, OH, OK, PA, SD, TN, TX, VA, VT, WA, WI, WV, WY

No. PA stopped permits by mail March 2011

Thanks for telling me. That explains why the two guys at my club said they went across the NY/PA border to get theirs. I guess I'll wait until the next time we visit down there.

My wife may have gotten one of the last of the non-resident PA LTC issued by mail. Hers was issued 4/29/2011. They got her application by the dead line but she didn't have a valid Illinois Firearm Owners ID card to send a copy of. They waited until she got her FOID card renewal and then sent the Pa LTC. This was through the Centre County Sheriffs office home of some of the most helpful public servants around, including Sheriff Nau. I've got a Pa and Utah non-resident LTC and plan on renewing my Utah next year, cost for renewal $15.75 for 5 years I understand.

Utah non-resident is good in most of the same states as Florida, except Utah is good in Minnesota and Florida isn't and a Utah is only good in Florida for Utah residents.

Utah should give you 32 states. I believe you can get a non-resident Nevada permit as well but you can't do that through the mail.

I live in CA. I will have my CA permit soon. After that, a NV non-resident permit as well as a Utah and Oregon non-resident permit. That gives me 36 states total, including all of my surrounding states.

I still have a non-resident Utah permit.

But I moved to MI and our license has better reciprocity. :)

As long as you travel to states which you can use the license then go for it.

I think Utah passed a law a year or two ago that says you have to have a CCW in your own state before you can apply for theirs (probably because everyone was just getting a Utah one).

I'd like to get a Utah one but their website says you have to get fingerprinted and I'm not too keen on that, I don't have to do that for my regular CCW and rather not (just one of those stupid things that I know probably shouldn't matter).

The fingerprinting aspect, along with the training requirement, is a primary reason why Utah is accepted in so many places. States with lower requirements don't usually get reciprocation from states that have more stringent requirements.

Deleting my question. Utah would only give me the addition of Washington and Wisconsin

If you only have one permit that covers multiple states, then it's a good idea to have a second. Reciprocity has been changing between various states lately, so a backup is a good idea. You don't want to get caught in a state that you thought you had covered only to find out they changed it the day before you traveled (or even after you entered the state).
