can anyone tell me the oc laws for Oregon or where I can find them at ? I have been hearing about doing a open carry day on the threads here and would like to participate . I always enjoy getting people comfortable with firearms and into the sport of shooting or just trying to educate people on them .

I was raised in a family of hunters and former and retired l.e.o.'s and sometimes have a hard time remembering that so many people are afraid of firearms and unframiliar with them because they have never been around them due to their upbringing , and the only interaction they have with them is T.V. and video games . Which gives them so many misconceptions with them . So far I have managed to get about everyone I know comfortable with firearms and into shooting for recreation . Also a few of them have been asking me about taking them hunting with me sometime , and one friend who is beginning to have a collection bigger than mine ( his girlfriend is mad at me because he pays bills then buys a lot of ammo and maybe a new firearm or parts with whatever he has left over.)

Oregon has unrestricted open carry under state law but some local regulations may exist.
For example some counties and cities may regulate the public carry of loaded weapons.Portland and other major population centers have ordinances which require all firearms carried in a public setting or in a private vehicle to be unloaded and in plain view or securely cased unless the individual has an Oregon license to carry.
So be careful in these areas.

I don't mean to threadjack, but I have a similar question: Is it okay to carry an unloaded and cased rifle in public (e.g., from the store where it's purchased to a residence) on foot in Oregon? This isn't considered 'concealed,' is it? Just wanna be sure. Thanks!

Yes.I'ts OK.

Solo Flyer speaks the truth. In OR, if you have an OR Concealed Handgun License, then you can open carry everywhere that you can concealed carry, which is everywhere except federal buildings, jails, prisons, and courthouses. If you have a CHL, state premption applies, and cities, towns, counties, etc CANNOT prohibit open or concealed carry in any places that arent banned by state law.If you have a permit, only state law applies, all "local" laws are void.

But, if you dont have an OR CHL, then state premption does NOT apply, and "local" goverments can pass laws agains open carry as they see fit. Even then, the vast majority of the cities/counties do not have laws against open carry, but there are a few, and you need to be careful if you do it without a CHL. I know of NO comprehensive "list" anywhere of what cities/towns/counties prohibit open carry, so basically, you need to look up the laws of EVERYWHERE you plane to go, in advance. The only places I have ever heard of that prohibit open carry without a permit are Portland, Hillsborough, and I beleive Salem. But, I wouldnt be surprised if there are a few other sities that do it also, even some small ones.Like I said, look it up for each individual place you plan to go. Or, just get your OR CHL and then you dont have to worry about it, as all local laws on carry will be void.

If you post where you live or plan to be in OR, I will try to help you by looking up the laws for those places, with the exception of here in Eugene, where I already know for a fact, open carry without a permit is legal, AND the city police, and county sheriff's are fully aware of that fact, as I called both when I 1st moved here just to see what they would say, and/or what their general attitude on open carry seemed to be, and both the Eugene PD, and Lane Co. Sheriff's people that answer the phone at the non-emergency.info number, said they could care less if you open carry, (just dont be doing anything stupid) and the policy of both is to NOT make ANY kind of "bogus" arrest for "disturbing the peace", "brandishing" or any crap like that, that has happened in some places. They said if they get a call, the will ask the caller WHAT the "man with a gun" is doing, and if it just sounds like a normal person open carrying, they will explain thing to the caller, but are required to send a car to check things out, just in case, at which point, if they find the "man with a gun", they will just make sure he's not doing anything illegal, and be on thier way.

I have open carried in many places here in Eugene, to include the Wal-mart in soccer-mom suburbia, and the public library downtown, right near the police and sheriff's stations, and no on seemed to notice or care, no screams, no cops, nothing.

There is actually a pretty comprehensive list, but there's also a lot of towns with no website at all or codes listed online. The cities that have "loaded firearm carry" bans are clustered on the I-5 from Salem north. Hillsboro has no ban, but Beaverton does. So does: Portland, Oregon City, Tigard, Independence, and Dallas.

oops, Hilsboro...Beaverton, I always get those two mixed up on the OC thing for some reason (and always misspell hilsboro too!).Sorry.

Probly comes from the fact I never looked too deep into it (and have a poopy memory), as I got my CHL 2 weeks after I moved here, so it's a non-issue for me. I also have no reason, or interest in going anyplace north of here along I-5, so....

Regardless, it's just easiest to get your CHL if you live in OR, then you dont have to worry about dealing with a patchwork of laws for OC.Also, if Lonnie says there is a pretty good list somewhere, I'm sure he'd be happy to tell you where to find it. I had never really seen a "list" per se, just seen various places mentioned on different gun boards when the subject comes up, and had not seen one on OFF's website, so I figured there probly wasnt a good one for whatever reason, or I'd have thought they would have it. maybe they do and I missed it though, like I said, you dont have to worry with a permit, so I didnt ever look too hard, and Eugene and the immediately surrounding area was all I was really ever concerned with, and it, and Lane co., both have good websites with all the laws on it.

OpenCarry.org--oh, yeah, that makes sense:banghead:
I kinda forgot all about that website. oh well, at least I was right about Salem and Portland, and knew there were "some others":D
