Anyone know whatever happened to those Korean M1 Garands?

Same shenanigans with agriculture. National security. You can't depend on imports for food and weapons when your country is as "active" as the US concerning international politics. Allowing such imports would kill off large parts of our domestic manufacturing base.

There isn't anything wrong with an imported M1 carbine or Garand. For those of you who don't know it they can be rebuilt and they make great shooters. I've rebuilt a Korean import and it shoots as well as any of those CMP service grade guns. There are parts galore to rebuild these things including barrels and stocks. Just because there's an import stamp on the barrel doesn't mean a heck of a lot. The import carbines here in the US are now being sold for $700-$800, about $200 more than they were a few years ago. More than likely we won't be seeing anymore carbines or Garands, imported or otherwise. In a few years everything will be north of 1K. It really is a sad state of affairs but that's what we have to deal with.

Edit. If you are thinking about ever owning a piece of history you might consider locking in on an import right now. The barrel is the only expensive part to replace so examine the ME (muzzle erosion) and the lands. New barrels are available for about $200 installed. People are buying these up and rebuilding them for resale right now. Just a heads up.

These rifles were paid for by taxpayers money a long long time ago by our great grandfathers. Its property of the American People, We the People! We the Miliitia. But govt doesnt want the People to be armed and ready of the arms of their forefathers as stated in the 2A . They fear the People , the Militia may armed themselves with these venerable M1 garands and carbines , and turn against them.

If the govt has no fear of the People, then they should have brought these back a long time ago. Simple as day and night.

I can't believe people are still touting this "they don't want us to have them because they're afraid of us" nonsense.

You can buy all of those things on the free market in this country with no restrictions in most places, including semi-auto commercial versions of the M-14.

So take off your tin hats and let's stop the paranoid BS. :(

I tend to agree with speedo, although I dislike my own stance. The guns are easily marketed if produced in the US, so there is very little to speculate on an idiocy conspiracy by the elected officials. The reasons for denial of importation may be flimsy, but for a common gun that is being built new, that is worn slap out and potentially dangerous I don't so much disagree in not wanting them. They may be FA converted, they may have chopped barrels or whatever by now making them potentially NFA items in addition to being potentially in dangerously bad shape. It's not worth the effort to disassemble, inspect, approve, rebuild, etc. What would be nice is for there to be recievers manufactured in the US and parts kits brought home with the understanding that parts may be beyond use.

I tend to think they've probably already been purchased by importers and are warehoused off-shore, waiting for the green light to bring them in.

Where did you hear that? I've heard and seen photos that these are still in factory sealed shipping cans, six rifle per can, I believe, that have never been opened.

Same with 1911-A1s and Carbines.

Thanks...Bexar
Way back when there was first talk about them being sold to importers, several years ago. Some letters from the CMP were posted online regarding their lack of interest.

Only Patriots own M1 Garands. Heard that said somewheres. Kinda think there's some truth to it. Maybe they want less of us.

Researching my own question I did find several comments about the CMP and the Garands. Unfortunately, I was also in mid-preparation for my Wife and Daughter finally coming by for a day's visit after two weeks since the last visit so I too pre-occupied to look into it.

Both of them are either in college or working away from the home so I was a little pre-occupied. Wife and kid trumps guns discussion...:D

But what I could see there was a lot of CMP discussion including comments from the CMP.

Just another reason to cast my votes according to the pro-gun candidate - and we can all read between the lines on what that means.

The Korean Times article that is the basis of this "breaking news" is almost 3 1/2 years old.

The WarhistoryOnline website has amended their article with the following:

Update 27-4-2015, this appears to be a story from 2012 and the import has been blocked by the Obama administration. Sorry folks!

So no good news regarding the import.
