Ok. I've got three. I shoot with one hand with lots of different loads. NOT all. I use standard Wal-Mart ear protection. No problems. I have no problems hitting the target with the first shot to the last. No I would'nt take it into combat, but if one were sitting on the ground next to me, the guy in front of me has a major problem, maybe even behind an engine block-LOL

The idea that .50 BMG and .500 S&W can even be compared is just CRAZY! I mean, just look at the size difference!

<<I have no problem with an anti joining the discussion. They have been invited by the management. But have the guts to say you are against people owning guns. You will be treated with much more respect, and we will do our best to educate you, and make a convert of you, in a reasonably polite manner>>

Agreed.
I never posted on a anti-gun board before (good idea to start). At times, I do look for information to see what their up to.

Speaking from FITST HAND range time with the 500 magnum:

* NO it wont break your wrist. Any medium framed male can handle the recoil with a 2 handed grip. Im only average, and had never shot anyhting larger than a 357 before i shot the 500. My wrists were not broken, The gun didnt go flying, it didnt jump back and hit me on the head. It kicks very hard, but its not uncontrollable.

* NO It wont blind you, but there is a good sized muzzle flash, even with the long barrel.

* NO it wont break your ear drums. I shot the 500 indoors, and standard ear muffs were enough to keep my ears safe. No ringing.

* YES it is very heavy.

* YES the trigger and Hi-Viz sights are good. It is plenty accurate for hunting applications. THAT being said, its not going to give you rifle-tight groups; you have all seen pics of this thing with a scope and a bi-pod. Have NO delusion, this gun is not a snipers weapon.

I do NOT think this handun is combat worthy. It is simply TOO big, TOO loud, TOO heavy, TOO slow, and low capacity ta' boot. Its big and heavy enought o be awkward in CQB efectively negating the pistols only advantage. It also takes a few SECONDS to get back on target with full power loads.

The answer is NO.

IIIA kevlar isn't rated to protect anything approaching the .500, so I'm not sure where people get the idea it will stop the round. But of course it's not going to knock you down or break your chest. Nor is it AP in any sense of the word. Ballistically, it covers a similar range as light to medium .45-70slugs with all the pros and cons that go with such rounds.

As far as recoil, there are a LOT of these things that get sold on the local boards with half a box fired. That speaks for itself. A Casull is as much recoil as I ever intend to put up with.

I don't think it is too loud for range use or hunting with proper hearing protection, but I sure wouldn't want to shoot it in a SD situation without muffs or plugs.

Anyone actually know the DB of a blast from the .500 canon? The only one I've shot is the 4" bbl version, quite the muzzle blast.

Yes, I have seen this too. More so now, as the years go by. 2003 when they first started out. I guess, one can assume that the original owner, bought it as a novelity? Owner realized it wasn't working out for them. Can be a good thing for other "to be owners". But I've only seen them (used) selling for $100 less than if you buy retail. Price, based on (retail) $900. Meaning, their in E+ condition.

<<I don't think it is too loud for range use >>

The one problem I found out with indoor ranges, shooting this thing. Some, I say some...indoor ranges will not let you shoot a 500 Magnum, or for that matter, anything above a .44 mangum.

" 'Jeez, where does this crap get started ?'

I used to hear this same "engine block" garbage about .357s, about 25 years ago. Maybe that's where."

Yeah. I saw a message on the Xerox email about 1985 (we had it pre Internet, pre Kerry :p ) stating that a .38 spl could penetrate a car bumper to bumper :)what: ).

At that time I opined in a reply that those boys had been inhaling some kind of smoke other than powder smoke.
