I was at Cabela's today and I got a Triple K 196-10 holster for my 1911. The tag says "walnut oil-plain". I thought that was just the color, until I tried using it.

First off, this thing smells worse than the devil's butthole. Second, whenever I pull my gun out the front sight (white dot) is soaked in some kind of fluid, which I can only assume is oil. The outside is slippery too.

So what's the deal with these things? Will it dry out? Is it really an oil soaked holster? Why? Does it stop rust? Should I keep this thing in a barrel of salt for a week or so?

I'm confused.

The Triple K gear I have is a drop-loop western-style belt, a Cheyenne holster, and a 6-round 12ga belt-slide. All were pretty much dripping oil when I bought them. You could see it on the inside of the plastic bags they came in.

I took old, clean t-shirts, like what you use for shining your shoes, and wiped everything down pretty aggressively. Massaging the gear seemed to help get some more oil out too.

It must just be the way they do things. I've got leather from a few other manufacturers and nothing compares. On the other hand, I also paid about twice as much for the quality gear over the Triple K.

Years ago leather gear was soaked in needsfoot oil or similar to waterproof the leather, not the gun or whatever. Today it generally isn't necessary and sometimes can be counterproductive if it makes the leather too soft.

Get a roll of cheap paper towels, and wad some up and put them inside the pouch to absorb the excessive oil. Then put the holster in a warm but not hot place (under 90 degrees F.) and occasionally replace the towels inside the pouch and use other sheets to wipe off the exterior. Give it a few days to a week and most if not all of the excessive oil should be gone.

In the future avoid any leather products that have the word "oil" in the description, unless that's what you really want.

This is a case where old wasn't better

Is this the holster you got? http://www.triplek.com/Products/id/38/grp/4/prd/345/

Agreed. This is the "old school" way of doing it, the same principle as "oilskin" rain gear, which was a fabric soaked in some kind of oil. The oil repelled the water, all right, but it got all over everything.

Yeah, it looks very much like that one. It's a beautiful holster and at $34 it's a steal too.

I stuffed it with paper towel this morning and just replaced it. It seems to be drawing some of the oil out. I'll try to repeat this process till it gets a little better.
