Anything bad to say about the Taurus PT1911??

Well, from everything I've read everyone seems to love the new Taurus 1911s. I have always liked the price/(supposed) value balance of the gun, however I was just turned off by its looks. Contrary to many here, I feel the same way about my guns as I do about my women: I have to be physically attracted to them, at least on some level. Short-sighted, maybe. But I feel that if I am going to spend that much of my own money on something, it should at least be something I am proud of, not just 'well wait til u shoot it'

Up until now, I would not have this gun simply b/c I did not like its appearance. However, my local Cabela's has one in stainless steel w/ rosewood grips which I must say is quite flattering for it. And I think I could be OTD for less than 700$ NIB which is even more attractive.

I've already read all the forums and reviews praising this gun up one side and down another.

I also know that these reviews can be biased (advertising money, etc)

I am more interested in any negatives. So my question is:

Has anybody had any BAD experiences w/ this gun?

Furthermore, if I buy this gun, am I getting a good gun? Or am I just getting a good gun for the money?

I am not a good enough shot to notice the difference b/w a gun that shoots 1" and 2" groups, so absolute top-tier performance is not a necessity. But I would rather not get a piece of junk dressed up w/ a bunch of extra features to look nice but is still a piece of junk...
 
I had a stainless one about a month ago and had problems with the thumb safety coming apart and locking up after only a coulple of shots. I could tap the two sides back together and it would last only a couple of shots again before the two sides would work apart. Took it back to the dealer and he said that he had another one do the same thing before. Ended up getting a Para SSP and am very happy. Just seems to have better quality control in my opinion.

I've had a PT1911B for about 9 months. The only bad experience has been me trying to learn to reload and starting with 230gr lrn. Getting the right crimp took a bit of time. My other experiences with the pistol are that it shoots very accurately and has had no mechanical problems.

I think the PT1911B is (a) a good pistol and (b) a good pistol for the money.
 
I have nothing but good things to say about my taurus 1911. Accurate, reliable and a tremendous value.

The taurus is fine but as posted by walkalong... not for $700 dude. That is wasting good money on a decent gun with less than spectacular customer service.

Look at a Springfield Loaded model. You can pick one of those up for 600-700.
Look at the Kimbers. I paid around 600 out the door for my Kimber Custom II with a couple of boxes of ball thrown in and the Stainless model can be had for about 50-75 bucks more.
 
New, the Taurus ought to run around $600. You can get a new Kimber Custom or a used Colt, Kimber, etc. for the same money. I have shot the Taurus and I have to say, it shot really well, but I have to agree that it leaves something to be desired cosmetically.
 
I shot my father's this past weekend. He picked his up NIB at a gun show right after XMas for $450.

My only complaint was the grips this one had. It had wrap around rubber finger grooved grips that were too big. I think the stock type grips would have been better for me.

We put 3 boxes of ammo through it and it really didn't become accurate until the end of the third box. Once it was relatively broke in I was impressed with it. We ran Speer 230 grain and Magtech 230 grain FMJs through it. No hiccups at all.

Everyone says how much harder it is to disassemble a 1911 with a full length guide rod, but they either need something to complain about or have other issues because it was just as simple to take apart as a regular 1911.

I also don't see what people are seeing when they talk about finish. This thing was well finished. The machine work was acceptable and the coating was even.

Mine required a detail strip and cleaning (along with some deburring) right out of the box. It had an awful lot of tailings and burrs and grit all over the lockwork.

Once that was done it functioned fine but (as someone else mentioned) it took about a box and a half of ammo to "settle in", then the groups tightened right up. Since then it's been fine functionally though it dislikes Remington hollow point ammo.

I got mine pretty cheap, (NIB just before prices went haywire), just to have a 1911 style pistol. I like it fine but it's a range/play gun and I have nothing heavy riding on it like I do my self-defense guns. I won't have anything that says "Taurus" for a self defense gun. Too many bad experiences.

Will I keep the one I have? Sure, it's fine. Would I pay $650+ for another one now? I doubt it.
 
I had the same prolem as genecole with the safety. The gun overall seems to be as accurate and has a better trigger than by Springfield Black Stainless Target 1911.

I purchased my Kimber Custom II from Elliots gunshop in New Orleans. They are no longer open due to the illegal purchasing of firearms and straw deals that were being allowed.

Go to Davids Gallery of Guns, get one shipped. Prices are different depending on what your shop decides to charge but I can get a NIB Custom II for under 700 shipped to my local shop.

Lol, maybe that is why you were able to get it so cheap, b/c I promise you, 700$ OTD is not the standard price on ANY Kimber or Sprinfield Loaded, especially in SS....:D
 
Only thing bad I can say about Taurus Pt1911 is their use of the slide as a billboard. Other than that they are better than any Colt I have owned and at least the equal of my two Kimbers.

Lol, denster. I was looking at their Raging Bull revolvers. Not because I hunt or need protection while hiking, but just b/c I thought it would be fun to toy w/ at the range. But I never could get past that 'RAGING BULL' plastered all over the barrel.....

So you own a couple Kimbers (that prob cost a few hundred $$$ more) alongside your Taurus 1911, DENSTER, and think the two are of at least comparable quality, reliability, accuracy, etc???
 
The safeties are an issue. Mine broke BEFORE I even fired it. I replaced them with a set of Wilsons, then sold it.
 
I had one of my customers for about 6 weeks...that was up to him. I compared it to an STI Spartan and a SA stainless version...
The STI for the same money is in a completely different league as the Taurus.
Sorry...just my experience with them.

Actually I have two Tauri one a blue and one a stainless. The two kimbers I have are a classic target and a procdp II. Yes the Taurus offerings are at least the equal of the Kimbers in fit, finish, accuracy. As to dependability I have several thousand rounds through the Kimbers with no problems and only about 1,000 through the blue Taurus and about 600 through the stainless no problems yet.
 
I have a blue PT1911. Like it a lot. No issues. For SS, $700 seems high, even with nice grips. Saw the SS version NIB at a gunshow last weekend for $600.

Tuckerdog1 is right. I got my SS for $589+tax. Put a set of rosewood grips on it for another $25.
 
for a LOT less money you can get nice loaded RIA Tact. or the Spartan, better deals and from what my friends have said, better guns....
 
I rented one at the range I go to a few weeks ago. I didn't care for the straight-8 sights (or whatever they call them now.) This particular one had a very fussy grip safety. Don't put much stock into that experience though, the rental guns only get cleaned when they will no longer physically function.
 
You better be OTD for under $700! That's pretty steep,even including taxes!

I had previously had nothing but glowing reviews for mine,but then this happened last time I went shooting:

You can see,the ejector got bent. It didn't effect performance,but it still bugs me. My pistol ran fine (still no stoppages so far!) and I didn't notice the ejector until I got home.
