Hello everyone,

Anyone know where I can find a good place to learn skeet/trap within a couple hours driving of NYC? I do not have any permits or my own weapons and would need to rent. I've been greatly interested in this shooting discipline for some time and would love to take my close friends and family to try it.

Any tips on a location or advice on getting started would be greatly appreciated. :)

New Paltz Rod & Gun Club Right up the Thruway. You need to get a gun, though.
6pm Monday Nights. -Google it.

And there is an open .22 rifle shoot this Sunday 10am -4pm; you might want to stop by.

Thank you so much for the replies!

Orvis Sandanona looks great! And yes, I've been wanting to move out of NYC for the longest time...

Ah, yes, i recall looking into the Orvis site when I was in NYC. Very interesting.

There is a range in Fairfield or Patterson, NJ. It was the closest/cheapest/best in relation to NYC when I lived there. I would go there periodically to shoot. This presumes you have a car, which isn't a give depending upon where you live there. I don't recall the name of it but some internet searching will help you find it. NJ has a state shooters' assn. and they likely will have it listed.

Another tip is to get a copy of "Shotgunning: the Art and the Science" by Brister. It will ramp up your learning curve amazingly quickly. And it's a hoot to read.

I will search around for that.

I wish I could recall exactly what township it was in, but I can't. I do recall it was a fine place, and there was a Jewish temply across the street. And that's about it!

Basically, I hunted and hunted and the easiest places to get to from Manhattan were in NJ because they were closer and easier with traffic than heading north or on to Long Island. So I'd just recommend hunting in that direction. I think I recall there was a place on Staten Island, but I never went and it wasn't as easy to get to because of having to use the ferry and then public transit.

Good luck! Ah, NYC gun ownership, that brings back painful memories for me....

I would think most members here would be happy to help someone from NYC, that is interested in shooting. All of the "move out of (fill in the blank)" posts, add nothing to the discussion. Not very high road in my opinion.

+1

All the people in "free" areas who simply bash those who do not are self defeating. They do not realize that the restrictive areas seek to impose their will on the rest of the country and the more they forsake the cities they simply turn a blind eye to our cause as a whole as gun owners. We either stand together for all or be divided and "conquered"
