Anywhere to learn to shoot near the NYC metro area? Without rifle/pistol permits?

I live in NYC and have been wanting to go to a shooting range with some friends and family for years now. Any members can recommend any establishments within reasonable driving distance of NYC (and preferably reasonable prices) that do rifle rentals/instruction?. I do not have an NYC pistol or rifle permit, but to my knowledge it's legal to fire a rifle in NYS without a permit. All shooters are over 21 years old with a clean background, if that helps.

In NYC there is the West Side Rifle and Pistol range. 20 west 20th st. bet. 5th and 6th ave.
You can shoot long guns there but not handguns. You'll need to take a safety class at the start of session. Their tel. no. is 212 929 7287
to shoot handguns you'll have to go out of state PA. would be best

In NYS you can't handle or touch (let alone fire) a handgun without a permit, seriously.

I called the west side range and apparently you need to schedule the class a week in advance so they can do a background check, which I'd be ok with. The site says they rent 9mm carbines and 22lr, what might you say the kick is like on them?

A 22lr rifle is like getting punched by a gnat. 9mm would be getting punched by a large fly. Barely noticable.

I believe there are public ranges in Norwalk and Bridgeport, CT which rent handguns.
