AOW... Remington 870

What is the process for owning a AOW (Any Other Weapon)? http://www.gunsamerica.com/guns/976675646.htm I live in Texas. Can I legally own one? If so, how would I go about owning one? Does anyone have experience owning AOW or SBS (Short Barreled Shotgun) firearms? Does anyone have information they can give me? Thanks in advance.

Texas allows the ownership of short-barreled shotguns, short-barreled rifles, AOWs, machineguns, suppressors and destructive devices, as long as your federal paperwork is in order. If you can legally purchase a handgun from a dealer, you can legally purchase an NFA weapon.

The 5 dollar transfer fee is nice, but the problem is, you could never put a stock on it, and the 200 dollars you would "save" on the transfer fee would have been spent for the manufacturing fee. Thats why I think you would be better off to fill out the forms and pay the nessasary 200 dollar fee to chop an 870 down yourself.

+1 for chopping it yourself. You will pay less if you buy it, chop it yourself, and register it as an SBS than buying it as an AOW. I bought a chicken head and a pistol grip stock for mine. I can switch them out and enjoy a 11.5" barrel on either one.

I thought you couldn't manufacture a DD after 1986, or is that only full-auto?

Just full auto, absolutely nothing else was banned in the FOPA.

One thing to keep in mind: An approved ATF Form 5320.20 is required when transporting an SBS out of state, while an approved ATF Form 5320.20 is optional when transporting an AOW out of state.

So does Texas consider Remington 870 AOWs a "handgun" or a "short-barrel firearm"? (There are very few restrictions on carrying a legally-owned "short-barrel firearm" in Texas.)
