My wife wants to join me at the next appleseed shoot. I have though about having her shoot a 10/22 for both days, but would rather have her use a centerfire for the match.

My Garand she doesn't like, and the G3 is out of the question for her. I am thinking of steering her toward an AK variant.

What make, variant, chambering would be good for this in your opinion?

I voted other. 10/22. It is easier, cheaper, and she will learn the same things at an Appleseed using it.

Other

10/22 would be OK. If you want to go centerfire I'd go AR-15. If you want a compromise use a .22LR conversion or a dedicated .22LR upper.

I'd just stick with the 10/22 also or whatever she wants to switch to, if she wants to switch. I've only been to one Appleseed so far, I only noticed one guy who even brought a centerfire, only heard him shoot it a few times, and he didn't make Rifleman. One guy's wife shooting a 10/22 got the highest score of anyone out there.

Another thought is to bring 10/22's and keep the centerfire in the trunk. You could use it on Sunday if you feel like it.
But not to belabor the point, there isn't anything they teach there that can't be learned using a 10/22.

A properly equipped .22LR rifle is the best option for an Appleseed. I'd hate to think about shooting an AK from the prone position for 500rds, through two days and I'm no stranger to recoil. The sights on an AK are also not conducive to fine work, nor are the triggers. Appleseed is supposed to be a learning experience and the best tool for that is a .22. I'll probably shoot the AR a little bit at the next one (my 3rd) but rest assured the majority of my shooting will be done with a rimfire.

Another vote for using the .22 for the lady for both days.

In fact, no real need for her to use a centerfire, unless:
a) she REALLY wants to.
b) she will be shooting a KD (Known Distance) in excess of 100 yards.

Im with kimbernut: and others

Go Simple 10/22 or Go All In! AR 15....

And personally the AR could turn into something great with the wife!
I say she could possibly get addicted to it.

AK....:barf:...... Sorry ... MO!

Sig 556 Classic

I am a huge fane of thus rifle because it offers a reliable piston design
similar to the AK but is adjustable as a bonus. It takes standard AR magazines. The gun is a little heavy BUT that makes for an extremely steady platform. IMHO it is barely more than a .22, in terms of felt recoil. The Swiss style handguards is he most comfortable (IMHO) of any black rifle. It will break open for quick cleaning like an AR. It doesn't have as many accessories as the AR but the platform offers a very nice blend of the good features of both the AR and AK platform.

My vote would be for a VZ58. Shoots the same 7.62x39 as the AK, but is more user freindly and at least a pound lighter. My wife likes my AKs, but she really likes my VZ58.

The 10-22 seems to be the favored rifle for appleseed.
Less recoil and muzzle blast both are conductive for flinch reduction
Your shooting neighbors will appreciate the lower muzzle blast.
Around here they suggest the 10-22

I voted other, a .22 caliber rimfire bolt action, maybe a Savage MKII heavy bbl. with a couple 10 rnd mags, IMO that is what Appleseed is all about.

I vote a .22lr of some semi-auto type. The military has used .22s for decades for training purposes. Some thought there. Low/no recoil, cheap, light. No matter how much she's into shooting, 500 rounds of .30/7.62 anything will be annoying after two days.

Until a good AR pattern rifle can be purchased and a decent trigger installed I would stick with the 10/22. An AK pattern rifle may not be able to give you the accuracy you need to do well.

I would like to try to run my new Cooper M57 in an Appleseed shoot just to see how I would do, I can even buy a 10 round Anschutz magazine for it so I am not handicapped too much on the reloading for rapid fire stages.

The rimfire rifle SHE likes, preferable sharing mags with the rimfire rifle YOU like.

You can't hardware your way to accuracy, and you can't pick a gun reliably for another person, so stop doing two things grossly wrong.

^ That is solid advice, let her find a rimfire she shoots well that fits her and go from there. The 10/22 is a good candidate for this since there is a plethora of aftermarket support in the way of stocks and such to get the right fit.

BigFatDave,

You'll be happy to know that I have yet to do anything wrong. Let alone 2 things.

She does well with the 10/22 already and is comfortable with the AK.

I'm looking for information as to what works well at the Appleseed Shoots.

She always picks her own firearms.

I voted other as well. I vote for a mini-14. Yes, a mini-14. If you can shoot 4 MOA (1" group at 25 yards) consistently with irons and in time, you will earn a patch. The 580 series are more than capable of doing this and are reliable rugged light rifles. For the course, I'd get the 22 LR adaptor kit for the mini-14 mostly to save on ammo costs. She may not like the Garand influenced style. If this is the case, I'd just go with the Ruger 10-22 and covert it to the "Liberty rifle" that Appleseed discusses (google it as lots of info). Good luck and have fun.

Sounds like a great idea Sheepdog.

What she didn't like about the Garand was the weight and the recoil. She shot it well, it was just not to her liking.
