Specific Questions about Appleseed

Oh so here's the deal I have been wanting to do an appleseed shoot for a while but there has not been one in my area for at least as long as I have been looking. But now thanks to THR I just found out that there is one in March in Oregon. So now I have a raft of questions that hopefully you can all help me with.

I understand that appleseed is all about shooting what you've got but I have a tax return coming and plan to use part of it for a new gun or two anyway.

1. The only centerfire rifle I have is a Mosin M44 would this work WELL for appleseed? Or would I be wasting my time
2. Does appleseed have any specific rules against pistol caliber carbines? I have had my eye on a Kel-Tec Sub 2000 for a while and it seems like it would be fun to shoot appleseed with it.
3. What about and AK or SKS? Can appleseed be done with these? Can it be done well?

Either way regardless of what gun I bring I would bringing a semi-auto .22lr as it recommends.

take what you have.

be aware of the applseed snipers, that the only reason they go is to be the best. the ones that show up with there 24x scope for shooting 25 meters, and moly chromed, ss, tactical, fluted, heavy barrel, blah blah blah. whatever if you are gonna go just go have a goo time and get the most training value out of it you can. i am sure that you will see lots of aks, sks, and the likes. i went and took my ar, i didn't even get down and shoot, the staff( abunch of remf's that work in the post hospital) had it out, they didn't want to allow me to have my ccw on my side while i shot. and there were some other things that came up as well as my pride so on and so, i would like to go one day again, and actually get something out of it, but not with that bunch of people.

Appleseed

Don't worry about the "snipers", they are missing the whole point of Appleseed. And since most of the shoots are at 25 meters that 24X scope just gets distracting chasing every bump. Any mag fed 22 with a sling is the right tool for this job (500 rounds can get expensive). If you want a scope (because some of us older shooters have a hard time seeing the front sight) dial it down to 3x or 4x it will do fine.

Appleseed is an opportunity to learn how to become and what it means to be a Rifleman. You'll be tested against a standard, the Army Qualification Test, not against each other. It's not a contest in that sense. The only thing you will be compared to is what you shot last time. If you can get 220 out of 250, congrats you qualify. Don’t worry if that doesn’t happen first time. Not many shooters can walk in cold and pull that off.

At the same time, during rest breaks we get to hear about the events of April 19th 1775, about the people of Lexington and Concord, the Minutemen, Riflemen, and dangerous old men that put it all on the line against the strongest military force in the world so that their kids and descendants (us) could be free men.

Unless you have a heart of stone you will walk away knowing it was the best money you ever spent for a shoot.

If you've qualified then you get a Riflemen patch and an offer to become an instructor in training and start teaching others to become riflemen.

Oh ya, don't forget! Ladies, kids, active military and active reserves all shoot for free, so find an extra mag fed 22 for your lady or your kids if you feel they are old enough to shoot and take instruction. Bring several extra mags for each gun. You’re about to put 500 rounds down range.

January was the first time my wife (not an ardent shooter) ever attended an organized shoot. By the end of the second day she turned to me and told me NOW she knows why I love my country so much, she had just heard stories that weren't taught when she was growing up, I swear there was a tear in her eye. Today is our 12th anniversary and guess what she wanted for her anniversary present... A ruger 10/22. You think I’m glad I took her? damn right!

I don't see one in Oregon on the Appleseed website. I would love to go if there is one. I missed the one in SW WA last August because it was my birthday and I had guests in town. Could someone point me to the details of this shoot?

Not well. A couple hundred rounds, mostly from prone, makes my shoulder hurt just to think about it.

i'll be at this oregon event as well...i'm just planning on bringing my 10/22. I didn't find it on the website either but i know there's an event because my coworker is one of the instructors and he told me about it. Maybe they're just slow to update their website.

To the OP take whatever rifle you have enough ammo for. The MN seems to be a fine choice if that is what you have. A .22 would be cheaper and easier on the shoulder though.

Do they teach the tightly slung positions similar to highpower? With the sling over your biceps etc.?

Not all rifles respond well to a tight sling due to the designs of the forward sling swivel imparting stresses to the barrel.

Not even sure that the 10-22 even has sling swivels???

Yes, Appleseed teaches the use of a snug GI sling. Not so tight that it's a turniquet and your fingers are turning blue, but snug. The correct position should be above your bicep so that your heartbeat coming through that muscle won't pull your shots.

You will learn standing offhand, sitting, kneeling, and prone positions. There are no benchrests at an Appleseed since it's rare to stumble on one in the field.

The program is exploding at an exponential rate. Already, after just a couple short years, we plan to have over 300 events coast to coast this year. Here in Ohio, where I am, we had basically nothing a year ago, and now have five locations (with probably at least 2 more coming online) and close to 20 shoots by the end of the year.
