I went to my first Appleseed over the weekend in Van Etten, NY. It was a bit of a drive for me but I was able to stay at my cousins house an hour north so that saved me some money in hotel costs.
All in all I enjoyed myself alot. I'll admit when I first got there I underestimated the difficulty of the AQT, seeing how I've always shot expert or just inder it in the army I figured I would have been getting my rifleman's patch after the first Qual run. Boy was I mistaken, there were like 23 shooters the first day and only three people were able to qualify, alas I was not one of them. The weather was decent, little bit of sun but windy and cool enough that a sweatshirt was needed. The instructors were very knowledgable and the blocks of instruction were very well presented. There were two families present, one that had two young boys, ages ten and 13, and I'll tell you what, those boys were keeping up with everyone else, I wouldn't be suprised if one or both got their patch by the end of the second day.
Day two, yesterday, it was hotter out and less wind, thus I'm pretty well sun burned on my face and forearms. I believe one of the guys who came for just sunday was able to qual right around lunchtime. As it was getting later in the afternoon, right around 3:30 I decided that due to my sunburn and long drive ahead of me that I would shoot one last AQT and call it a day regardless of how I did. Up until this point I was scoring 168 at my worse and had a good number of runs up in the 196 to 205. I also decided that I would switch ammo for the last run and use the box of Federal match .22s that I had, up until that point I had been using normal Federal bulk .22s Well with that last run I scored a 215. I don't know how many others were able to qual after I had left but I know that they had some longer range targets set up for the end of the day as well as some tanerite.
To be honest that last couple of AQTs I did I shoot the prone positions from the sitting position because my body was starting to hate me and making laying on the ground painfull. While I had only one malfuntion over the two days with the federal bulk ammo, I had two instances in that last AQT with the match ammo where I had to dump the mags and reload rounds that had tried to chamber when there was already one in the chamber.
I was shooting my Wally World special 10/22 with the only modification done to it was the addition of an el cheapo simmons 3-9 power scope. It is interesting in that the turrets on the scope say that they are 1/4 MOA adjustment but I found them to be more like 1 MOA adjustments, but previous experience tells me that they are not consistant with their adjustment, might be 1 MOA one day and the next they will be 1/8 MOA.
Hopefully I'll be able to attend the Appleseed in Throup, NY in July, but even if I am unable to I'll be telling everyone in my Guard unit about it and to recomend everyone that can to go.
