I went to my first Appleseed over the weekend in Van Etten, NY. It was a bit of a drive for me but I was able to stay at my cousins house an hour north so that saved me some money in hotel costs.

All in all I enjoyed myself alot. I'll admit when I first got there I underestimated the difficulty of the AQT, seeing how I've always shot expert or just inder it in the army I figured I would have been getting my rifleman's patch after the first Qual run. Boy was I mistaken, there were like 23 shooters the first day and only three people were able to qualify, alas I was not one of them. The weather was decent, little bit of sun but windy and cool enough that a sweatshirt was needed. The instructors were very knowledgable and the blocks of instruction were very well presented. There were two families present, one that had two young boys, ages ten and 13, and I'll tell you what, those boys were keeping up with everyone else, I wouldn't be suprised if one or both got their patch by the end of the second day.

Day two, yesterday, it was hotter out and less wind, thus I'm pretty well sun burned on my face and forearms. I believe one of the guys who came for just sunday was able to qual right around lunchtime. As it was getting later in the afternoon, right around 3:30 I decided that due to my sunburn and long drive ahead of me that I would shoot one last AQT and call it a day regardless of how I did. Up until this point I was scoring 168 at my worse and had a good number of runs up in the 196 to 205. I also decided that I would switch ammo for the last run and use the box of Federal match .22s that I had, up until that point I had been using normal Federal bulk .22s Well with that last run I scored a 215. I don't know how many others were able to qual after I had left but I know that they had some longer range targets set up for the end of the day as well as some tanerite.

To be honest that last couple of AQTs I did I shoot the prone positions from the sitting position because my body was starting to hate me and making laying on the ground painfull. While I had only one malfuntion over the two days with the federal bulk ammo, I had two instances in that last AQT with the match ammo where I had to dump the mags and reload rounds that had tried to chamber when there was already one in the chamber.

I was shooting my Wally World special 10/22 with the only modification done to it was the addition of an el cheapo simmons 3-9 power scope. It is interesting in that the turrets on the scope say that they are 1/4 MOA adjustment but I found them to be more like 1 MOA adjustments, but previous experience tells me that they are not consistant with their adjustment, might be 1 MOA one day and the next they will be 1/8 MOA.

Hopefully I'll be able to attend the Appleseed in Throup, NY in July, but even if I am unable to I'll be telling everyone in my Guard unit about it and to recomend everyone that can to go.

Appleseeds are EXCELLENT.

I'm looking forward to going to Ramseur again.

I am intrigued by these appleseed shoots and want to attend. There is one close by in a few weeks i might go to. But, I have a few questions:
*What goes on?
*What equipment do you need to take? Will my ironsight-pump action .22 work?
*Does this get you into the CMP?

Welcome aboard dutch pirate, The Appleseeds really are great, this was my first one, so I'm still new to it.

Basically you go and learn basic rifle shooting fundimentals, the proper way to sling up a rifle and get into a solid prone, sitting and standing positions. They also talk about the history of the Revolutionary war, mainly the acts leading up to the outbreak.

If you go to their website, google appleseed shoot, they have a list of equipment that is needed and what is suggested. You can use your .22 many people used .22s, along with an AK, a couple SKSs, some M1As, mini 14s and a couple bolt guns. However while you can use your pump .22 I would suggest for ease of use getting, or borrowing a semi auto .22 that uses mags. that way you are able to focus completely on becoming a better shot and not being distracted by having to cycle the action, plus with a pump you would be breaking up your solid position every time to run the action, not very conducive to accurate fire.

and finally, it does meet the marksmanship qual for CMP so if you are a member of the legion or VFW or the military or another recognized org then you are good to go with CMP, or you can join the Appleseed org, I think its around 20 dollars a year, and that meets the requirements as well.

but I highly suggest checking out their website, there is a wealth of information there.

Thanks for the welcome. I have lurked for a long time, and joined so I could see pics when they are posted.

Yeah I have dug through the websites concerning the appleseed shoots. A couple more questions:
*Is it iron sight only?
*Is the 25m portion for .22's only?
*Could I use an AR-15?

Is the 25m portion the actual AQT, or do you have to shoot the long distance course to make rifleman (which would require more than a .22)?

I fancy myself a pretty good shot just hunting and goofing around, but I would love to see if I can measure up to an actual test.

The Throop , NY shoot is about a 5-10 minute drive from my house. I want to go badly but it is happening about 4 days after the due date for my first child, so I doubt I will be there.

FYI: Local pronunciation of "Throop" is identical to the word "Troop". Skaneateles is right down the road for a real fun word to say. Also, one of the state's only remaining Drive-in theaters is about 2 miles from the range site.

the ranges shot at depends on the individual ranges, the AQT is done at 25 meters and you can do it with any rifle you want, although some are better than others. there were a few ARs at the shoot I went to and they did just fine, one had issues but it was a combination of loose parts and reloaded ammo meant for a bolt gun. I brought mine but stuck to the 10/22. check out their forum, lots of good info there.

dutch pirate,

Any rifle, any caliber, irons or optics. That being said, a mag fed semi-auto with a 1 1/4" GI sling works best for the course of fire. At most ranges we only have the 25m AQTs to work with.

Appleseed does qualify you for CMP purchases.

25 meters is for everybody.

AR's aren't just permissable, they are one of the more receommended rifles, and many of them are used.

Scopes are allowed, and if you have aging eyes, probably a smart thing.

That pump .22 won't be the best rifle to use, due to mag issues, but you can use it. We also have loaner Ruger 10/22's available at many events.

Now, Dutch Pirate, if you're planning on an Appleseed, and want to use a loaner, make sure and e-mail me, and I'll pass the request on to Scout, as he's our man in Texas. He'll take good care of you, he's a great guy.

Thanks for sharing the weekend, i was going to head to a California Appleseed shoot a couple weeks ago but decided to buy a .22 marlin 600 and get my NRA RSO cert instead.

Will be using my M1 Garand and Marlin 60 at the next CA Appleseed shoot or perhaps the Las Vegas one or both:cool:

Since you mention a pump being not great, how would a tube feed marlin 600 be? It holds 18 rounds so i could not hold position like a mag rifle. Will the 18 rounds give me enough to work with? Also my Marline does not have a sling or the swivels should i look into getting them put on for the Shoot?

Hey Nickle, thank you and the other instructors for a great weekend. Hopefully I'll be able to make it to the Throup shoot. my goal is to shoot 230 by the end of the year.

Thank you for coming!

If you do need a scope, lose the cheap scopes. Rimfire scopes are just awful. I think I'm known around here as the "guy who puts way too expensive scopes on his .22s". Such as a Nikon Monarch. Maybe that's overboard. But when I ask it for 1/4 minute, it's always 1/4 minute.

But if your eyes will handle iron sites, I understand that tech-sights are pretty nifty. Same site picture and adjustment as the AR-16, I think I've been told.

Don't forget the seventh step! Sounds like you'll be doing just that when you tell your guard members to come out.

Mindwip, your Garand will be perfect for the Appleseed shoot. As for the Marlin... You'd get more out of the shoot if you put a sling on it, as we do not allow rests or bipods - we teach the use of the sling.

For reloading it, especially if you attend one of Nickle's Appleseeds, you definitely want to get a speed loader for it. I've seen them for tube-fed rifles before, so I know that they exist.

dwarven1, thanks for the answer, i was going to put a sling on no matter what but i will make sure i get one on before hand. I plan to shoot the Marlin more to save money, 30-06 is too much right now.

I promise that you will learn something about shootin'...and i'm certain that you will enjoy yourself.
