My wife and I are planning on attending our first Appleseed Event this August in Ottawa, IL. In doing some research I found out about the Liberty Training Rifle, so I decided we needed a couple for the event. My wife is very new shooter so I wanted to make sure we were shooting the same type of rifle so that if she had a problem during the event that I could quickly help her, or simply swap out rifles to finish an event. Anyway, here are a few pics. The carbine is about 12 years old, the "Sporter" rifle is brand new. Both got a set of Tech sights and a sling. The carbine also got an extended mag release since it had the old style originally. We sighted in both yesterday, and they performed flawlessly. I also ordered 6 (3 each) factory 10 round clear mags as I have read that you need a bunch for the event. Any advice on the rifles or about my wife and I participating in our first Appleseed would be most welcome!

Get both of you a set of elbow pads and shooting mats. You'll also be better off using Garand-type adjustable slings.

heh! i'll have to remember that excuse next time i want to buy two of a rifle :)

hope you enjoy the appleseed!

During any course of fire, the most mags you will use is two. A couple of the courses require a magazine change.

That being said, having a spare magazine on the line with you with 10 rounds in it is a good insurance policy. If you should have a malfunction, get the current mag out, clear any brass from the chamber, and finish the round with your spare magazine. It has save me on a couple of matches. :)

Very nice guns ive never even seen or heard of, Ill make Google my friend and find out more about them.

I think you and the Mrs. will like them.
I bought my girlfriend a 10/22 of her own, she loves it and is a pretty dang good shot.
Perfect beginner gun.

I have one setup similarly.
Very fun gun.

These are the upgrades I put on all 10/22:
Volquartsen Automatic Bolt Release Simplifies reloads, can also just mod the stock part.
Recoil Buffer Supposedly lessens wear but I like it because it makes it a bit more quiet.
Extended Magazine Release Cheap and longer than factory release.

Pretty interesting! Thought they looked like 10/22s. Found this:

Those sights look like the'd work great!

I like 'em! I'm building a few myself; two out of Marlin 795's and one Ruger 10/22. Tech sights on all of them...

I'll echo what someone said about using the Garand strap (which requires 1/1/4" loops, not the more common 1" loops). Appleseed teaches the use of the garand sling, whcih makes a huge difference in how you'll shoot.

But you are more than welcome to use what you have, too. Many Appleseed matches will have the slings and swivels for sale, but not always.

I had more fun at my first Appleseed this year than any other time I've been shooting. Will do another one later this year, I'm sure...

I believe in the project so much that I wanted to build a few inexpensive loaner rifles for friends and family to use, so lack of equipment would not be an excuse to not go.

Up here in New England, you'll want at least 4 mags, because the AQT is 40 rounds in 4 minutes.

Enjoy!

Congrats. I've been to two of them and have really enjoyed them. Somewhere on their website they have a good list of things to bring. Elbow pads and a mat of somekind (old rug, sleeping bag mat). I'd also suggest some kind chairs to sit in. Sunscreen, water, Tylenol, a good lunch, handiwipes, kneepads.

Nicely done! I built one kinda similar; same sights but an M1 carbine-type stock:

I also added a match hammer and sear to get the trigger where I wanted it. I'd love to hit an Appleseed shoot, they sounds like lots of fun. :)

what IS the diff between these, and ruger 10.22's, I don't see it.

If they are more accurate, or have a better trigger than a 10.22, then i
would be all for them.

This setup takes the 10/22 from being a plinker or complete money hog into being a very effective low cost training rifle. I haven't done an Appleseed yet, but I still highly recommend the LTR. Mine looks just like Adam's second one.

I've run through the drill a few times, and even with my CZ it was humbling. It prompted me to get some basic training again and revisit my stances.
