im looking at high end .308 ARs. anyone have any advise on any of these?

POF P308 (piston) - $3k
LWRC REPR (piston) - $3.4k
LMT MWS (di) - $2.5k
Larue OBR 7.62 (di) - $3k
GA Precision GAP 10 (?) - $3k

If you want a 308 caliber AR, there are plenty of choices. If you want an AR10, the only choice is Armalite.

As far as that goes, what will spending $3k on another 308 AR get that the $2k AR10 NM doesn't have?

I love Armalites and own a couple. AR stands for Armalite (big misconception about the AR term). you can spend lots of money on a custom "AR10", I just bought another AR10A2 for $1250, and I got an ARMALITE.

just to add...any other .308 on an AR platform is not an AR10, only Armalites can say that...the others are just high price rifles on that platform.

That's pretty widely known, TP.

Actually, the real Armalite was the small arms division of Fairchild Aviation. It's a shame they're out of business. At least they did sell the production and name rights of the AR-15 to Colt back in the 1960s. Otherwise, no real AR rifles would be available today. As far as AR-10s, there's a company in Illinois calling themselves Armalite now. They make some rifles they call AR-10s, but those new fake AR-10s wont even use the same magazines as the real Fairchild Armalite AR-10s used. The DPMS LR-308, and Knights SR-25 & M110 are built on the real AR-10 platform. In the case of the Knights rifles it's probably because Eugene Stoner, the man who designed the real AR-10, went to work for them after he left Armalite.

You might also look at the FN SCAR 17. I was looking at all of those same options recently, and decided that the SCAR had the most features I was looking for. One of the biggest plusses it has going for it is weight. It is significantly lighter than any of those others you listed, even with the 20" barrel. Of course you may have different requirements than I did.

For what it is worth I didn't know it stood for Armalite, it has become such a generic term.

Reminds me of this quote... When we define a word we are merely inviting others to use it as we would like it to be used ... the purpose of definition is to focus argument upon fact and ... the proper result of good definition is to transform argument over terms into disagreements about fact, and thus open arguments to further inquiry. -- C. Wright Mills

I really like my MWS... a lot.

The larue is nice. I personally would go for the GAP 10. There is usually a bit of a wait, but you can get used ones with low round counts for around 2500 usually.

What ever you get, realize that there is no standardization between the different models from different manufacturers. Uppers may not interchange, internal parts are different, and even the mags aren't standardized.

Personally, I like my military pattern rifles to actually have made it thru military trials. So I would look at a FAL, G3, or SCAR first. Heck, at that kinda price range a 7.62 NATO Galil starts to look reasonable.

I have ArmaLite, Noveske and well soon be adding a LMT MWS. I have friends with the DPMS and they are pleased with their rifles. The .308 platform AR style rifles just shoot well, pick a roll mark and price point. Look on Gunbroker, some good buys in the used market.

MOD (UK) has adopted the LMT. US Army has adopted the Knights M110.

What Ugaar said... the LMT is designated L129A1. I'm very happy with it. Hitting stuff 500-900yds all day with it. Solid Rifle no regrets buying it.
