I have EOTech and Aimpoint, fast on target/s with both eyes open and they're advantageous in low light/darkness.

In my very un-expert and humble opinion, a variable 1-4x is the best choice for an "all around" optic. However, I have an eotech on my personal rifle. It really depends on what YOU want to do with YOUR rifle.

If you don't know what you want yet, seriously consider learning the irons as well as you can. When you see the NEED for an optic, get the one that you want for your own needs.

I have a red dot (am trying a loaner 3x flip to side magnifier) and I like it, but if I had more money (hopefully later, WHEN I have more money) I really like the idea of a 1-4x variable with 'true' 1x. The Trijicon Accupoint TR24 looks nice.

I voted red dot.

I've got an Eotech 552.A65 on a Colt LEO-marked carbine, and just picked up an Aimpoint PRO on my Bushmaster Patrolman M4gery. Wish I had played with the PRO in person more before ordering it on line. I much prefer the reticle on the Eotech 552.

An ACOG is hard to beat if you can afford it, however all around means some sort of magnifaction and still be usuable close in so a 1-4x with illumination or even a 2-?x or the ubiquitous 3-9x would work well. My Overwatch HBAR has a 3.5-10x Leupold m3 , while the bitty Carbines have lesser or no power as the barrels get shorter. The thing is an AR can be and normally is, a very accurate format so for all around on a 20" rifle I want some higher optical power to exploit that. They make good varmint rifles!
M4 type like I said the issue 4x ACOG or a good low power scope with Illumination.

1-4x is ideal for an AR15, specifically with the .223/5.56 cartridge.

Most situations you would be fine using the 1x. For those few that would require magnification, you've got it.

I really like the Burris MTAC.

Though it's most widely used in competition, I think it's a great all-around optic for the AR.

I really prefer iron sights on a 5.56 AR. So I voted other.

I have an Aimpoint Pro and love that.

I am going to buy a 1-4X. Still trying to figure my budget out. Rut-roh!

So will your bank account

They are only like $500-550. If you cant afford that one time outlay of case, how do you afford to shoot the AR, seriously.

Any decent optic will cost a few hundred dollars. If you think an aimpoint is expensive don't look at what I think the best all round optic is a S&B 1-8 short dot.

On a similar platform to an AR 5.56 (FNH SCAR 16S) I used and liked very much the EOTech.
When I moved to the .308 version I went to a Trijicon ACOG to better utilize the longer effective range.
For home defense/CQB there's nothing faster for me than the EOTech. At over 250 yrds the ACOG pulls away...

Only $550?

That's a lot of money, for some people, to spend on a firearms accessory.
