I currently have an AR 15 carbine with non detatchable carry handle. It currently has an Aimpoint red dot device mounted. I have enjoyed target shooting with this rifle and am planning to hunt with it this season. The Aimpoint works great in normal lighting conditions, but suffers in low light such as dusk dark. I have a 30mm tube, 52mm objective scope I could install on this rifle. Could anyone offer suggestions as to what setup would perform best in low light conditions? Thanks.

Can you possibly imagine I have tried the search tool prior to posting?!? I didn't find what I was looking for, so.....

Do I understand correctly that you're looking to mount a scope on your A2-style AR-15 (i.e. carry handle, no flattop) so you'll have improved low-light performance while hunting?

If so, you could mount your big 30mm-tube/52mm-objective scope on the carry handle using an appropriate Weaver mount and rings. Bear in mind, though, that this will put the optic pretty high on the rifle, which may make it difficult to get a proper cheek weld. In my experience, these types of setups are ungainly at best, but there's not much else you can do if you really want to mount a big scope on an A2 upper.

Luckily, there are a ton of different carry handle mounting solutions out there.

Unfortunately, I don't have any experience with them. All of my AR-15's are flattops. It sounds like you already have the optic you want to use, you just need to find a mount that you like. I'd imagine that mounting the scope on the carry handle will give you enough clearance that the objective diameter won't matter much, but someone who knows more about this than I do will most likely be along shortly.

New flat-top upper is about $100. I can't see a smith charging more than $40 to swap your upper with a new one.

If you lived in the PDX area I'd do it for free. It's a very simple job requiring minimal skill and simple tools that cost maybe $60. BSW

I find that red dot type sights work better in dim light than any other option (with the presumable exception of night vision). What are you hoping to accomplish with a different optic?

What I'm hoping to accomplish with the addition of a scope is to be able to see better and for longer during the low light conditions of dusk dark when the critters like to come out.

I have noticed that I can see with the naked eye for longer than the Aimpoint will allow. A large objective scope will allow even more hunt time than that.

My concern is that once I mount the scope up on top of the carry handle, there will be little or no cheek rest. I'm just trying to see what my options are as far as mounting the scope...

What carry handle mounts have you all found to work best?
Who makes a decent set of 30mm rings?
Where's the best place to deal with on the above items?

Thanks for all the replies. I appreciate the input.
