Who has the most "tactical" AR here?

Where's Specops when you need him?
I'm always among you, watching...waiting. I am the silent guardian of the mall.

Our Mall Ninja Tactical Assault Response and Deployment (MANTARD) team doesn't use AR's. The .223 isn't a great round for Chechen rebels when they've got cover behind the custom license-plate kiosk on the second floor. We use Solothurns mounted on each side of the golf cart for flushing them out. ;)

I'm in the process of building an AR, but it's not going to be very tactical, I'm afraid. I'm committing the heresy of configuring it as a target rifle and plinker.

The only "tactical" thing I'm putting on is the extended bolt catch. Otherwise, mid-length gas system and iron sights. I'm forgoing the collapsible stock in favor of an aluminum one. I may put a sling on from time to time, if that counts...

Oh, and yeah, the 1911 unfortunately counts as an AOW. My shop bought a Hi-Power off a customer today, and as it has the old stock groove in the grip, we'd considered putting one on. Then it occurred to us we'd be breaking the law. Stupid NFA; I can't have any fun

There seems to be an inverse relationship between level of practical experience and number of gadgets on the rifle.
In general, I agree, but have you seen how much "crap" that the go fast guys have on their rifles? I'm just guessing that they have a whole lot of practical experience and that they're not carrying around a bunch of stuff that serves no purpose.

I think the major question is what is the likely role of the rifle? If you're using it for personal home defense, a good red dot is not a bad idea. If you think any real-deal use of this might happen at night, a light is not a terrible idea, either. When you start to get beyond this point, you have to start seriously considering the weight/bulk vs practicality issues.

Actually, I believe there's a 'Grandfathering' provision in place regarding detachable stocks for old pistols - folks can use the wooden shoulder stocks with old C96 Mausers. Not sure if there was a cutoff year on that.

I'll have to check on the grandfathering issue. You may be right, but still...I'd rather not give the ATF an excuse to spring an audit on us.

Personally, I agree with Coronach. I work with a Marine who recently returned from the sandbox, and on his first Saturday, he looked at the AR's customers were bringing in and remarked, "why do they have that much $%*^ on their rifles?"

Each piece adds weight and throws off balance. You really have to ask if you need an iPod, taser or Norelco Salad Shooter on your rifle.

Me, I'm fine with good iron sights. I may get a scope for long-range target, but then again, I hate rails on pistols, and I shoot SLOW compared to these youngsters I see these days.

My ultra-tactical rig is as follows:

Colt 6520
Sling
XS tritium front sight post.
Hogue grip
M855 ammo (not seconds, not PD) loaded in D&H mags.

That's it. Top quality AR. Lightweight. Can be used at night as well as anything else (except for true nightvision). No sighting system to break. Compact and short. Did I say lightweight? Fast and simple. :)

If I were expecting urban or suburban combat, you know like Fallujah  ..I'd opt for an AK with an ACOG. I don't see that happening, and even if it did, my first choice wouldn't be to participate. I don't think the Chinese are invading and I don't see a revolution starting anytime soon. :scrutiny:

My concerns are natural disasters & the looters, economic/political turmoil and the rioting/looting it brings. Aside from that, the common criminal during regular peaceful times is the most likely. Basically - the threat is crime. S&B, ACOG and others aren't very useful for fighting off criminals since criminals will not be a 200+ yard threat.

You need to be able to make accurate and effective contact to 50 yard hits in as many situations and conditions as possible. That is worth more than all the tacticool gear.

A good quality AK is also a very good choice (add the tritium sight!).

I would call my and my dads rifles more "pratcical fun" than tactical/cool myself. the add ons of both serving definded roles/purposes.

my DPMS 16 inch AP4 with Triji' TA11 ACOG, Bushie' folding forward grip, surefire m73 quadrail, stream light TLR 1, and tac'sling

I'm not too tactical. No rails and I don't even have my lights attached. :(

My 7.62x39 AR has a little more frivolous junk on it.

OTOH, I'm probably in the top ten for tactical 22LR rifles. :)

OK. Who makes a picatinny adapter for a Norelco Salad Shooter? I am totally doing that now.

Mike :D

Yeah, but your sneakers aren't very high-speed at all. :D How very civilian. ;)

I look at these pictures and I wonder what kind of rifle these are. They don't look anything like my old M16.

How about this one?

Or should we go perhaps a little further back?

There's my tactical sneaker again. ;)
