AR-15 Pistol Questions

I love the looks of some of the AR-15 pistols some folks have built and would love to build my own! I've never shot a rifle round before, only handgun and the largest calibers I've shot were from my 44 mag and .480 revolvers. Would the recoil and muzzle blast from a 5.56 AR-15 pistol be any much worse or would it be more comparable to a S&W 500?

The buffer stops the recoil. The pistols I have seen retain the buffer. Little recoil.
