had a couple of the original ones with steel lips, eventually I got several more of the new ones with plastic lips, which gave me the willies

Yeah, I don't think they were Black Dogs, but I had some 22LR AR-15 mags that were plastic lips and after a year of keeping them loaded suddenly the shelf they were on was raining 22LR's; two of 4 magazines developed broken lips under pressure. I will only buy steel lip 22LR mags.

Been there, done that. I have used all of the mentioned AR 22 rifles. As already mentioned, the older 1-12 AR’s were more accurate than the later 1-7’s. I currently have the PSA/CMMG dedicated upper and a couple of S&W 15-22’s. The dedicated upper is slightly more accurate than the Smiths but does not have a bolt hold open, depends on the magazine follower to stay open after the last shot. The Smiths are just FUN!

Yeah that would have been my preference but as I said in stock was my main criteria. So I ordered what I could get, cause the best one is the one you have. I am thinking of trading up eventually. But I just needed something for now.

see now that is amazing!
Yes it was! I had no desire for one since I have several sweet bolt guns, CZ, Ruger, Remington. But I was in my son’s shop when a friend dropped by wanting to part with it. Something else he wanted worse popped up and his discretionary till was about $425 short right then. I have an AR I built that really shines with a Kreiger match barrel upper and spendy trigger, so I thought, why not, I can always get my money back. Haven’t had a lot of time with it yet but it’s going to have to improve a bit to challenge the CZ! Rimfires can be a bit temperamental.

My original fiberglass CMMG mags had the feedlips open up close to that point from wear at about 1K each.

CMMG. it's the best one out there. You can get the sub cal insert, but it's much more accurate w a dedicated 22lr barrel. Great shooter.
