I am thinking of upgrading from my bolt action 308 to a AR-15 Varmint rifle. What kind of performance can I expect at 150 yards???????

Of those of you out there that have this type of rifle how do you like it??????

Colt 6724 Delta Elite with a Springfield Armory tactical 4-12 scope on it, rangefinding reticle. Use it for targets and coyote, mostly. An occasional crow now and then at extreme range just to test my eye. :)

Damn tack-driver. Comparing apple-to-apples, it'll shoot nearly as accurately (not going to split hairs) as my Rem 700 VS with an 8-32 Tasco world class (yes, I know it ain't no Leupold) out to about 400 yards using the same loads. Anything past 400 the 4-12 SA scope is a disadvantage, so the comparison should stop -- at least, until I put a scope of equal power on the 6724 -- which probably won't happen because the SA has the advantage of fast ranging with its reticle and it's a better hunting rifle for that reason. The VS has its share of coyotes, too. :)

Good luck in your selection.

RRA 20" varmint, with badger rings and a super sniper 10X scope, firing a whole 30 round mag, rapid fire, one round a sec. prone, from a bipod at 100 meters I was able to put all 30 rounds in a 3" group using UMC 55 grainers.

With good ammo and taking my time, I'm sure this rifle would shoot easily 1 MOA

My AR is not as accurate as my most accurate bolt rifle but is easily MOA with most factory ammo, with its best loads it gets into the .5 moa range. I shoot mostly Black Hills 52 gr. JHP and 55 gr. SP which work very well on varmints considering they are not sold as varmint rounds. Coyotes are especially allergic to the 55 gr. SP.

I am really leaning towards them

In true High Road fashion, would you also post any pics you have of your AR target rifles.

browningguy nice rifle and thanks.......

i have had great results with the bushmaster varmiter with the 24" ss barrel and the predatormodel bushmaster. they have delivered awesome accuracy at much more than 150yds, they are accurate ad reliable, i have killed a many a coyotes with the bushmaster varminter at ranges btw. 200-250yds. on paper the varmiter does great out to 300yds, that is the longest that the local ranges go out to. granted it wasn't my rifle but i love it and i would love to have one.

My AR with stock trigger and 3.5x scope.

It's cold & icy here, but I'll take the 6724 to the range tomorrow and post pics of her with the target tomorrow afternoon. If it's not a good target.. it's not the rifle... it's my freezin hands. :)

I love shooting the ar-15 at varmints. The weight of the varmint barrels help to stabilize the rifle during recoil helping to keep the sight picture through your high-power scope on the exploding body of the coyote/whistle-pig/rabbit/pumpkin/insert-here.

It's really fun to shoot at paper as well.

24" fluted bull barrel, 1:9 twist

Now that I think about it you should look at AR-10s. Maybe an 18" or 20" ar-10 in .308 with a scope would be more compatible and friendly with your bolt action in the safe. You could hunt with it as well as use light .308 bullets for varmint slaughtering... the 5 mag clips for hunting, the 25 round for the yotes ;)

My varmint AR is built on an Eagle receiver and upper with a Stainless match barrel, two stage trigger, and a AWCS compensator.

The target on the left is one I shot on sandbags using 60 grain Sierra HPBT's. The square is .400". If I try hard and the wind is low it is repeatable. Just remember, 223 does not buck the wind as well as 308.

MR. Roberts,
that is a truley sext ar you have there. btw how do you like the grip pod. i have ran one on my issued m4 here in the sanbox and it has been great for me. it is a great piece of gear in my opinion.

I built one in 204 Ruger using a Select Match Shilen Barrel. I love it, it's just getting into prime coyote season around here so I've yet to kill anything with it. It's as accurate with factory loads as my 700 BDL in 22-250 is with hand loads.

Originally I felt a bit like a fool to pay so much money for a gimmicky vertical grip with a bipod; but after actually using it I am a convert.

Since I like to run my vertical grip fairly forward, it also works decently as a bipod though it still isn't quite as nice as a dedicated bipod. It is a pretty good deal for the weight though - a vertical grip and bipod for only 7oz. Both the vertical grip and bipod also come in handy when you hang a 20oz can off the end of the muzzle too.

Does any one else have experience with AR's in .204? Which factory models would you recommend and what kind of accuracy would you expect?

RRA makes nice varmint uppers. Are you looking to drop down to a .223? If you are looking for a .308 look no further than an AR-10 with the 24" T barrel.

No, I am thinking about another upper for my .223 set up now. I would use it for varmint hunting. Yes, the .223 I have works just fine, but I am trying to find an excuse to buy a .204. A .204 Varmint style upper to go on one of my AR-15's seems like a pretty cool idea. I just want to know if anyone has had experience with adding a .204 to their AR and what did they think about it. Now, if I had the $$$, I would go and get one built to "my" specifications, but I don't right now and just want to know about the current factory, after-market uppers in .204. Are they worth it, how do they shoot, and which one would you recommend?
