AR .22 vs .....

Don't see any problem trying out high quality optics on the tactical .22s.
Well I got the Trijicon SRS in today - got it mounted, and played with a little bit.
I'm very unimpressed - to me it looks like it's not quite ready for prime time (guess you can't believe all those glowing reports on the 'Net these days, eh?).

1. The Bobro mount must have been made for a left-hander?

2. No problem, I'll just take it off and rotate 180 degrees...NOT! They've offset the mounting screw holes on the SRS - ain't going to be no rotating the QD mount!

3. GLARE! Whyzzit my EOTechs have very little glare (I hear the glass is polarized?), but the SRS is not only a glare magnet, but the front lens when viewed from the business end of the muzzle looks like it would be a target magnet! It not only has glare (which I guess is partially rectified by the lens tilting back at an angle), but the darn lens is RED - I'd think it would stand out like a sore thumb in a sea of foliage!? Iff'n I was an operator, I'd HAVE to have the ridiculously priced Killflash on it, but I hear that kind of screws up the view / dot?

4. AA battery - no biggie, but I'd have preferred a smaller, shorter CR123.

5. Weight - it ain't no flyweight - I'm guessing most of the weight is the glass?

6. Solar Cell - I'd just as soon have it without the solar cell?

7. Pushbuttons - much harder to operate than an EOTech - good or bad? Bad if you want to make a quick adjustment (you really have to push, and little / no tactile feedback), but I guess you could view the difficulty as a plus AFA not accidentally knocking your setting out of whack?

8. No auto off - good or bad? Bad if you forget to turn it off (my EOTech has either an 8 or 4 hour auto-off function), but if you're an operator, you probably wouldn't want it to turn off automatically?

9. When you turn the dot up to higher levels, it blooms (to be expected), BUT you have all kinds of circular artifacts surrounding the do in view! Not enough to obscure, but why can't you design something that shows the dot ONLY?

Oh well...I've got 15 days to decide - I may just send it back and try to locate an inexpensive scope to play with, or I might end up with one of the Leupold's with the idea of moving to another gun down the line.

BTW - I cruised by Walmart @ 7am (my normal bed time) and caught the gal as she was putting out some of the Winchester 22LR 555 boxes - I got my 3-box limit ($23.17 / box).
Specs look pretty good - should be hot enough to cycle new / break in stuff? (36gr., hollowpoint, copper plated, 1280 fps.)
I'm assuming this is the same Winchester ammo you referenced earlier?
I don't have a lot of experience with Winchester - mostly Federal & MiniMag.
I have NOT had much luck with Remington 22LR bricks!

Deerhunter61;

I'll address the particular question of; are they as accurate as a CZ452? In my considerable experience, in a word - no.

I've hunted, for years, with a group of guys who try to eradicate a little varmnt that's prolific in the area. One gentleman whom I know is a very good shot, has used the S&W .22 AR clone for a couple of those years. And every once in a while another type of assault-22 shows up also. Ginormous amounts of ammo can be expended, but the body count per round ratio belongs to the better bolt guns, hands down.

I'm running a CZ452 American LHB with a 3.3-10X mil-dot scope on it, and the gun is accurate enough for me. Or, recently I made a cold bore witnessed & lazed shot on a varmint at 170 yards. One shot. Now I'm not gonna say that I can do that every time, all the time either. But I was confident enough to take the shot in front of this group of sometimes rude and abrasive people I go out with.

Basic, yes I've had good results with Winchester bricks from Walmart, Federal, too. Remington Golden Bullet, no, not with the Colt or S&W. Sadly I still have a few bricks of RGB, wish I'd got the others instead. Fortunately my Ruger Mark II pistol will eat GB.

Hence the training time Warp. If I couldnt afford it, I would take up knitting, or some other form of cheap fun.....lol. I also hunt with mine, so I'm used to humping with it for long periods of time, and shooting it quite a bit.

Anywho...I guess the 15-22 is the one to have if you want one that functions as closely to a regular AR as possible, but the Colt looks like it's constructed (externally) more closely to a true AR than the 15-22, and the Colt is all metal.

I don't get it, my .22lr AR lower IS a regular .223 AR, just a different upper.

There are at least 2 less available now! :D
BTW - shipping for 2 magazines was $4.99.

ManVenture Outpost also sent me an e-mail alert earlier, but they showed only 10 in stock, and they were gone before I could order - gotta be fast!

I want some short body 10 rounders. They are hard to find.
Go to Midway USA and sign up for their e-mail alerts for the 10-rounders.

I got a couple there when I got an e-mail alert for 'em.
They seemed to hang around a while - don't know if it was because Midway got a big order in, or folks just aren't interested in 10-rounders?
BTW-the 10-rounders are $17.99, the 25-round was $16.99 - shipping $4.92 (USPS).

You might also check ManVenture Outpost - I've had good luck with their prices and e-mail alerts, but you really have to play with shipping!
I recently wanted one small item and shipping was $11.99 - I added about 6 more items to the order, and the shipping went way down!?

I don't know how they figure out the screwy shipping rates.
You also have to play with Midway shipping - I was going to order two of their rifle bags - shipping on two was over $45, but on one it was only $15!?
It was cheaper for me to put in two separate orders - saved $15 on shipping.

I wanted a few of the short body 10-rounders for bench work.

Just playing around with some Magpul parts for the S&W and Colt.

The Smith came with the Magpul stock - slid a spare on and it IS Milspec diameter buffer tube.
The Colt also appears to be Milspec, but apparently the tolerances suck!?
It had too much wobble, and the friction lock did squat!

Tried a commercial tube stock on it, and it wouldn't fit, so I guess it is Milspec (kinda).

Kind of personal choice, I looked at the AR-15 22's and I was not impressed. Might be do to that I own AR-15's and while close just not the same thing. Of the one's that I looked at the M&P 15-22 was the best made and looking. Never had a chance to see the Sig or other high end 22's.

Prior to them becoming so popular (and costly) I purchased this Ruger 10/22. It is a Walmart model in rifle with a 22 inch stainless steel barrel as opposed to the carbine. As you will note the stock was swapped out for a ATI a double muzzle brake added, scope added and bi-pod. It is wearing a BX-25 mag which is 100% reliable.

Good luck on making your choice, this was mine and I couldn't be happier. And it is a tack driver with the 4-16x40mm scope.

Guys,

I just wondering about all of the AR .22s I'm seeing everywhere. They look to be pretty expensive compared to a lot of other .22s and I am wondering about their performance. Target? Plinking? Hunting? For those who have bout one what purpose did you purchase it for? Are they as accurate as say the CZ 452?

I notice a lot of people just talk about 'tactical 22LRs' or 'AR22s', then throw the Sig, Ruger SR22, etc into the 'AR22' category. To me anyway to be a 'AR22' it has to at least mimic the AR15 safety, charging handle, mag release, etc, not just kinda look like an AR the way the SR22 does.

Then you've got AR clones like the M&P22 and ARs chambered in 22LR like CMMG.

I got mine because I wanted an AR I could relax and practice with without worrying about how much I was spending on ammo the whole time I was at the range. I've got a tad over 17,000 rounds through a pair of CMMG uppers. I took the scoped upper to Appleseed awhile back and it managed to shoot Rifleman in spite of me.

Almost everyone else there was shooting a 10/22 variant. The lady that shot the highest score of anyone had a 10/22 with an accurized barrel.
