What happens if a fellow (We won't call any names) shoots 3/8" AR 500 Steel rated for rifle at 100 yards.......at 25 yards......with a .458 Winchester Mag with a 350 Gr Hornady Interlock @ 2450ish FPS?

A $44 Steel Plate down the drain, that's what. Cut through like a laser.

I would never guess that's AR500. I hit this 3/8" plate with a 458 Lott at 25 yards. 300 grain solid at 2700 fps. Not sure what grade steel it is, but it's a lot softer than AR500.

Sure. I hit a .22 gong with a 45-70 one day. Tore it out of the ground and tossed it 25m or more. Bent the heck out of it too. I paid my buddy to replace it as it was my idea. But a .22 spinner is a long way from a LV Steel AR500 popper.

In the first picture, it almost looks like the bullet left marks from the rifeling on the hole. Or is it just me?

2450fps shouldn't go through ar500 I think u got hosed on the steel. Speed is what kills steel.

Meh.....that'll buff out. Weld, grind, buff.

Plug welding and a little grinding works wonders. :D Especially on A36 steel which is what that actually looks like.

Ah, it's not dead! Keep using it and if you ever miss it just say, "Yep, that one went through the hole."

My dad made some swinging silhouette targets way back in the day in a welding class. You know, ram, chicken, turkey, pig. After having fun watching them shiver from 22 hits he wanted to see if he could 'spin' one. Well he found that a Mini 14 at 50 yards left a 22 cal HOLE in his mild steel target, barely moved it.

im doubting thats ar500 steel . it will dent, but not go through like that...imo i have an ar500 gong and its tough as hell ! a 5.56 with m855 lake city or my ak-74 5.45 steel core barely leave a tiny ding in it @ 50 yds with those fast moving penetrator rounds

I have to agree...shot lots of steel and it does not look right.

Years ago we bought a tin of 8mm....inside that tin was one round with a black bullet. Thinking that this just had to be an AP round. We had been shooting the plate for quite a while, with not so much as a dent....this black round right through like t was not even there.

I don't think you got what you paid for.

Ar500

I would be surprised if it actually is AR500. One thing I did notice is the lack of base metal pushed back and out of the hole as the other posters pics show so it may be abrasion resistant (AR) but not in the 500/550 category. Might be something like AR400 (supposition).

How did it react with other calibers?

This is a piece of 1/2" mild steel shot at 10 to 12 yds (from behind barrier)

I experimented with 9mm .40 , .44mag for pistols and .223, 7.62X39, 7.62X51, 30-30 flat nosed, 30.06 Nosler BT and the only penetration was a 165 gr .300 Win Mag.

You know better than that...right.?

It's certainly hardened plate or it wouldn't have chipped away in both directions. In mild steel the entry will double back over like the top of the photo below and push out like the bottom.

You could weld it up but would mess up the area around the weld.

Theoretically I did, but curiosity killed the cat. (Although I was suspect for awhile.)

Now I know from experience.

Shows what weight and momentum can do.

you shouldn't shoot rifles at steel that close. it's dangerous

i also think they're not giving you what you paid for. I've shot 50bmg at AR500 steel without damage. granted, not at 25 yrds!! but it's still going faster at 200 yards than the 458winmag muzzle velocity, with more than twice the mass.

Looks like a good spot for a gr8 bolt to me. :)
The $44 loss was probably a blessing. Just think what could have happed if it didn't penetrate. I think Walkalong sounds a lot better than Limpalong.
