Technically "big bore" is anything over 35 cal. -- But I'm not talking 44 mag carbine here. More like .458" bore, 45-70 Govt., any of the "Sharps" style target guns (which are BP, but nonetheless "big bore").
I'm shooting .458 Win. Mag. -- 500 gr. bullets, 2161 fps in a Ruger No. 1 w/ Leupold 4x fixed 30 mm VXI scope. (Variable power reticles get shaken loose.)
458 Win. Mag. is the first (1954) commerically available "elephant gun" caliber, introduced by Winchester in the Mod. 70, which began to replace the custom "English Doubles." It's currently the most favored caliber for African "dangerous game" -- Elephant, Rhino, Cape Buffalo, Lion, Leopard -- although it's being displaced somewhat by the .458 Lott, which is the same brass only longer to increase cartridge capacity.

No, as a matter of fact there are no elephants in my neighborhood. They've all run away out of fear for their lives . . .
