I have a Rock River AR. I am trying to replace the stock hand guard with a free floater, which requires removing the barrel nut. I can not get the darned thing off. I even bent the pins on my AR tool, and it would not budge. Any tips, hints or secrets? Or am I stuck with stock hand guards?

Thanks

The pins are for a freefloat type nut, you should have a wrench that engages most of the teeth of the stock nut. Do you have the receiver in a block/vice?

I have ran into a few of those types of barrel nuts that were loctited in place. It took some heat from a small torch to loosen it up. Then using my barrel nut wrench tool, it came right off. I have the DPMS multi tool for torque wrenches that does the barrel nuts and compensators all in one.

I do not have the block, but I did put the upper in a vice, lined with neoprene. Holding it was not the problem, as I bent the tool.

I will try Kroil and heat, though not at the same time.

Thanks

If you have it in a vise without a block held tightly enough to allow you to bend the tool, I'd be surprised if you didn't bend the upper receiver as well.

You want an armorer's wrench. The "big" end will have two sides, one with the pin and the other has a recess in it that looks like a negative of the barrel nut. Use that side. You won't bend it.

RR is well known for going crazy with loctite. Use plenty of heat (a must) and force and itll break. Your situation is normal for them.
