I got my PSA midlength upper a month ago and would like to install the same front side sling swivel similar to this Rock River Arms . This would make it easier to carry the rifle on ready across the chest . Wheres a good place online to find this ? Thanks

Search for sling adaptors that mount to the front sight tower. The advantage for the design I'm referencing is that the swivel is side-mounted. I have some in my "storage" but don't have a company name or model for you as all that is on display for the local show this weekend.

If you don't find it right away, let me know and I'll do my best to give you more detail.

I always try to avoid sling swivels that attach to the barrel, as they greatly affect POI when using the sling as a marksmanship aid. I greatly prefer something that attaches to the handguard, like this Blue Force Gear Universal Wire Loop: http://www.onesourcetactical.com/universalwireloop-shortversion.aspx#.Vc9008u9KK0 wrapped around the front of the handguard... until you can upgrade to a handguard that allows the attachment of accessories.

As indicated Brownells sells the Colt unit however the size of the barrel determines how tight and rattle free it will be. My Colt has some movement but is not objectional.

Sorry if it's an off topic question, but just to sate the nagging I'll put myself through what barrel length is that? 18 or 20 inches?

The one i got from PSA is exactly like this with 16 inch and black magpul midlength. I intend to keep the same handguard and make it as traditional as possible. IN fact i planning to get the classic carry handle A2 for the rear sight .

Could just attach to handguard slot.
Dunno if old style better/worse than M Lok.

Unless the handguard is free floated it doesn't make much of a difference whether the swivel is on the handguard or the barrel or the front sight base.

In any case, I think the OP is more interested in a carry sling instead of a shooting sling.

Wrong -- it makes a huge difference, even if not free floated. I was getting 4 or more MOA shifts from slung to unslung on my AR using the factory swivel. Switched it to a MOE handguard with an IWC sling stud installed on it, and POI shift went down to 1 MOA or less.

You will notice the same thing if you rest your rifle on the handguard versus the barrel. This is also why those cheap bipods that clamp on your barrel change POI so much more than a bipod mounted to the handguard.

And if the OP doesn't know how to use the sling as a marksmanship aid, he should learn! It is a very valuable technique and comes in handy in a lot of situations.

You can get the sling swivel you pointed out, but I find they hold the barrel too low, so that causes the rifle to flip over when you carry it slung in front of your chest. Care of the US Army, I carried a rifle many, many hours. GG&G makes a sling mount that gives you a quick detach mount and it bolts through the hole in the front sight base. So the weight of the barrel is below the sling and the rifle sits properly. In actual day after day use, you carry a rifle hundreds of hours for every hour when you take the rifle in a low ready or similar imminent posture.

As far as a sling throwing off the point of aim, yes it does if you are tightly slung up. But if you are carrying a rifle for days on end, and you need to use it, you just don't sling up when you fire. It's not a competition and you are not likely to be engaging a target hundreds of yards away. Note that I do shoot more accurately at range with a sling, but in a "carry" environment I think it is lower on the priority list than the rifle "laying" in a comfortable and convenient position.
