I'm playing (strictly playing at this point) w/ the idea of a carbine length 308. I like my AR and I equally like my M1a so I'm trying to figure which would be the better choice??? an AR in 308 or a M1a Socom?
Remember for those who participate...I'm in the PRK and I don't have a lot of options ;)

I dont live in Cali , so Im not sure, but isnt the Cali legal AR the one you have to crack in half to load:barf: ? If so, definately the M1A. Not even a contest.

Can an AR-10 take different upper of different calibers? Are you planning on a few different barrel lengths? Are you carrying it long distances?

I like the M1A, they are expensive though. How much are AR-10s?

Expense wise, they would be about the same - so, as a shooter & a performer...which is the way to go?

M1A hands down. In fact I would get a tanker model Garand and call it good. (can't those be left unmolested?)

I would say if you decided on the AR get one that takes cheap FAL mags but I guess thats out in Kali anyway.......Plan on moving back to the states anytime soon ? :neener:

I have no personal experience, but I've heard that the AR platform in .308 has been experiencing problems feeding. Personally, I'm saving for the Socom II. I lire the AR, and I have a Bushmaster AR15, but I would like the firepower of the .308

Outside the PRK, I'd say AR. You can get a very high quality, fully outfitted AR in the configuration you want for that kind of money. Also, the ballistics of the SOCOM are not that great unless you use lighter bullets like the 110 Hornady or want to stick to shorter range action. .308 out of a 16" barrel isn't the greatest, but will certainly still blow a hole through whatever short-range threat you have. I'm not suggesting in the slightest that you're under gunned vs. an AR. It's just that .308 loves 20-24" barrels ideally.

If it were between that and an PRK-compliant AR, I'd take the SOCOM any day of the week. Having to break open an AR to load it as if it were an SKS is totally absurd. At least you can use 10rd mags that change out quickly with the M1A.

Also, the SOCOM, loaded with proper bullets is an excellent threat to body armor and JBT's and the PRK is in no shortage of those. In fact, they exported them to New Orleans to carry out Nagin confiscations, which is their field of expertise. Needless to say, the vermin in the PRK are hostile critters.

Just being in the PRK is automatically being under a higher threat condition from either natural disaster (earthquake), a racially inspired riot, a widespread draconian "Mr and Mrs America, turn them all in" style sweep and clear (more like search and destroy) confiscation, and finally the threat of a neo-Bolshevik revolution (see San Fransicko).

Given those circumstances, the firepower of an M1A SOCOM is a NEED, not a want. Being in a place where the vast majority of the people hate the fact that you can be armed makes being effectively armed a necessity.

Godspeed my friend trapped behind the lines. :)

Weren't some SOCOM experincing some issues with the gas design.

I am an AR or AK guy, but if I were you I'd look to the SOCOM II probably, seeing where you live and all.

Okay sorry to thread hi-jack for a second.

In the PRK an AR has to be a break open action?! How exactly does that work?

My SOCOM is just fine and I find that the velocities are no problem...

SA: 2540

HSM: 2703

WWB: 2671

WFailSafe: 2575

Fed T/U 165: 2547

Fed GMM 168:2433

On average the SOCOM looses about 19fps/inch from the full size M14.

Okay that's just ridiculous. Rather then rant for a while, I'll just leave it at that. <Shakes head in disgust>

Wow, I acually want one of those lowers to stick a bolt-action .50 BMG upper on. It would be less fugly without a mag well that doesn't do anything...

For California, I think I'd have to +1 the vote for the M14 clones, but would probably lean (like someone else already suggested) towards the Scout Squad rifle rather than the SOCOM II. Just my take personally and no offense to SOCOM II fans; since I live in the United States, I can legally own enough evil black rifles that I'd prefer some nice wood and at least a whiff of historical accuracy on an M14 clone, I think.

I have no personal experience, but I've heard that the AR platform in .308 has been experiencing problems feeding.

That was true for the now-defunct Bushmaster that was made by RRA. The Armalite and DPMS have a good track record. Only issues I've had with my Armalite AR-10 carbine have been when using the modified M1A 30 rounders of foreign manufacture (the steel is weak and the feed lips flex).

However, in PRK I would go M1A. Fixed magazine AR's are just ridiculous. But look at the scout rather then the Socom II. Same gun, but wood and no rail system (and $400 less).

The other option instead of the AR is a Kel-Tec SU16 which I beleive is California legal.
