AR pros and cons, should I buy one? Your thoughts please.

i would get a sig 556. They have the accuracy of an ar and the durability of an ak. I have an ar and would rather have the sig.

dont think just buy. better do you homework on picking brands. and be ready for blind idiocy if you ask what brand to buy.

I think every redblooded American should have a AR15 in .223/5.56. Like a chicken in every pot and a car in every driveway. It's the rifle of your country and has been for along time

As a current M-16A2 toter (though modded), my vote is no dude. I have been playing with the M-16A2, the A4, and the M4 transformers, for years (mine were Colts and FNs if that helps either) and fired copious k's of rounds. The AR design is well, adequate. They are accurate and I've found them to be reliable in everything but sandstorms (KEEP THE DUST COVER CLOSED).

However, the 1/7 twist and 5.56mm ARE a problem, unless you are ONLY making holes in paper. The 1/7 twist causes for an over stabilization of the 5.56, this actually prevents the round from tumbling. Combine this with the fact that the 5.56 has a 3k fps Vel, and you end up with a penetration round NOT a knock down. The 5.56 also runs out of steam significantly at range as well...

My vote, not knowing your specific intentions, is this. Go with the 6.8mm SPC and go with another design, there are many other designs out there that are similar in price to the AR. Personally I like the Bushmaster ACR.

If you don't already have an AR you should probably hang it up. I don't get it.....why did you not buy the good stuff when you had the chance??? I have a Colt AR I'll sell you for $3,000.

Well, CA2005, it seems that I do still have the chance. There are 4 gun stores near my home that all have huge stocks of them, and a huge selection. For example, even a NIB pre-ban with scope Colt.

TJ, a bolt action rifle has fewer moving parts, is easier to clean, accurate and cheaper. Prettier too! That being said, I do have a Saiga in .308.
My bolt rifles are Russian, talk about cheap to buy and shoot. If you get the chance, try a Swiss K 31.
I understand AR's are more accurate than an AK, but they seem to be overly complex.

Okay, if you say so. I went to every gun store within 40 miles of my house and didn't find a quality AR, period. And the low end ones were way overpriced. I got mine on Gunbroker after watching a month for the right gun at a reasonable price.

When I left the service (USAF) in 1966 and turned in my M1 Carbine, the M16s were just being issued. I never liked them until I started shooting Service Rifle competition. Now, it would be one of the last rifles in my collection that I'd part with. They do grow on you!

Olympic gets bashed for two things:

-the political fiasco that they were involved in that brought alot of unnecessary import laws against us
-the plinkster AR model, which was well-known for having a good amount of lemons produced iirc

Olympic is also regarded as inferior because, well, with ARs you get what you pay for. A $750 AR won't be nearly as nice as one of the other $1000 brands.

I like mine. It's fun to shoot. I have and have owned many rifles. Ak's are fun shooters too, but the AR is addicting. It's fast as in high rate of fire and accurate. If you want to try another caliber you can buy a different upper.
I just bought a bolt action .22 to slow down and conserve on ammo. A CZ 452 Lux. If I had to choose one rifle for all my shooting including a legal and effective deer rifle the AR would be my choice. See pic in hunting forum.

I look at it as there are plenty of better guns out there(GO FN)
But the History and the feel is hard to resist. AR is something you are issued or born to love. All i can say is" If your gut is telling you you need one" then buy one that you feel is good for you. You can always modify it later if there is a problem.
