ar question

They are decent commercial rifles for plinking.

For the same price, though, you can get a near-mil-spec Spikes or PSA rifle which are much better overall.

I'm admittedly a brand snob. I have no idea why. I like S&W so I'd find a M&P15 Sport before getting a DPMS. Just saw one last week at a big box store for $729, I'd then roll that money saved into a better optic or more ammo.

I would not pay money for one.

The recommendations for a Smith and Wesson or Spikes in your price range are where I would go if I really didn't want/wasn't able to spend more than ~$800. I'd much rather have a S&W Sport, even, than what you asked about. Or a PSA.

I recently got into a forum war over cheep Ar's here at THR, but you should take the others advice here and get a better rifle for that much money.

I've got a DPMS in Creedmoor and couldn't be happier. Admittedly I've only put 600 or so rounds through it. A guy I shot with has two that have been flawless. He has put thousands of rounds through his. Trigger is not good. Other than that its a solid rifle.

Bottom of the barrel.

LOL, wrong.

DPMS is not the best by any means, but far from bottom of the barrel. lol.

It is a entry level AR. Depending on model, $800 might be either high or low. Sportical, $800 is a bit high.

For another 150 bucks you could get a Colt.

Another wow! When you find them for $950 let us know.

This thread is full of LOL.

I've been using a DPMS retro upper that's worked fine. It's not bottom of the barrel. Bottom of the barrel is when you get gas tubes misaligned and other fundamental defects. DPMS isn't defective, it just may not use parts as tough as a Colt. And you can remedy that yourself if you want.

I have a DPMS MK12 barrel, 5.56 nato, 1:8 twist, 18", stainless. It is one of the most accurate barrels i own. I've put 2000-3000 rounds through it for 3 gun and it has been great.

I disagree with the negative statements on DPMS..."bottom of barrel" ... not even a half true statement!

What Model is the one you have priced yotesmoker?

I have a DPMS Sportical .... A great entry level AR for the $$ (My Opinion)

I have Colt 6920 ..... It is Not A Colt 6920 (But it was not $1100.00)
I have a Wyndham.... It is Not a Wyndham ( But it was not $700.00)

This list could go on .....

I owned a DPMS LR308 and it was one fine piece of machinery......wish i still had that one!

I think we are in the era that about all manufactures are making an entry level AR... and price reflects that... maybe $599 - $699 range and then up we go with no end to it really..

My first was the Colt 6920 in 5.56... My First AR platform was the LR308

Just past November before all went crazy I impulse purchased a DPMS Sportical for $569.00 at Wally world... that is why I am curious of the model the OP is looking at...

Since December I have seen these same sportical rifles go for $1100.00 on Gunbroker....:what:

I recently seen a Colt back in Walmart for $1099.00, so patience in this day and time is a definite virtue and I would get a Colt or something else before I paid anything over mid 6's for what I consider entry level AR.

I loved my LR308 and the Sportical has a Home ... I am very Happy with the purchase and it is a quality built rifle in the $600 price tag arena. It is not even close to fair to compare it to say a HK, Noveske or Larue, or even my 6920 for that matter. We must keep our minds in line of apples to apples etc. etc.

and the AR battle escalates............:uhoh:

I think most rifles will work for most people most of the time. I think you have to drive a rifle REALLY hard to bring out the differences between brands. A DPMS is a great rifle for people who want an AR for what most people call regular use.

I don't see anything wrong with a DPMS other than they are overgassed like most commercial grade ARs. They are considered to be a lower end brand though. Make sure it has a 5.56 chamber. Some of them came with a 223 chamber and you wouldn't want to shoot 5.56 ammo in it.

If you are okay with light primer strikes causing failures to fire with 5.56 ammunition, that is.

Just my experience.

I have cranked through hundreds of rounds of Wolf/Tula with Bushmasters and DPMSs. Never had a light strike. Do they use a lighter spring than everyone else does?

Wolf and Tula aren't 5.56.

They do seem to use a lighter spring, or some other variable that results in a lighter primer strike.

http://www.glocktalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1466753

The triggers on RR's and some DPMS rifles are not designed for hard military primers. That fact is well known...

I have never had a light strike with my DPMS and I've used everything from wolf to SS109.
DPMS is perfectly acceptable as a starter rifle. no they aren't milspec but milspec food tastes like ass and milspec TP is so thin you can see your hand on the other side so I don't really buy into the whole milspec craze.

they don't chrome the barrel which actually has been known to increase accuracy, it just shortens barrel life if you burn through more than 1000 rounds a month which, face it fellows most people don't do. 800 may seem like quite a bit now but considering 4 months ago those rifles were selling, not listed as, selling at $1400 each. prices are not likely to ever go back down to the $600 they were this time last year, they never go back to normal after a scare. $800 is a little high but it's more than likely within the new average retail range. PSA only has one model currently in stock and it's double the aforementioned $600

oh... and my DPMS is sub MOA with less than $1000 into it overall(including optics).
