Purchasing a DPMS Group Purchase AR-10 upon my return from overseas. I am planning on making this rifle a bench gun but wiht some reasonably priced hardware on it. My hopes are to create decent groups in the 600-800 yard range, and I already have a few Trijicon products on my close-range weapons, and carry one on my current rifle over here. Would this be a decent scope/reticle?

What do you mean by "bench gun?" For bench rest type of shooting? Banging steel or precision? At known distances?

What I don't like about the Trijicons, unless things have changed, is that the reticle is mil dot, but the turrets have MOA adjustments on them. The reticle isn't very fine either and may be a bit heavy for benchrest shooting.

For what the Trijicon costs, I'd be looking at Vortex, Weaver and Sightron. They don't have the super cool fiber optic/tritium reticle, but the are available with matching reticles and turrets and reticles more appropriate for benchrest shooting.

Even if you are just talking about generally shooting from a bench, there are better choices than the Trijicon, especially if your going to be dialing.

I think the Trijicon series make good "combat accurate" scopes. Im a huge fan of Trijicon products on fighting rifles. But I don not believe they make a good scope for shooting groups at long range.

For around the same price you can get a Leupold Mk4 4.5-14 powered scope. For a few hundred more you can pick up a Nightforce.

EDIT. Just looked at the model you are looking at. The Leupold I was quoting would be several hundred dollars cheaper and you are solidly in Nightforce price range at 1300 bucks.

Really, I think that you could get into that Trijicon for closer to $1K. Still, for $1K, you could be looking at a Viper PST or a Sightron SIII, either of which will serve you better.

I'm looking into these now, kinda edging towards the Viper scope. thanks for the input everyone!

pgeleven, when looking at the PST, be sure to pay attention to the specs. There are two models of 6-24X50, which is the one I assume that you'll be looking at. One has a FFP reticle, but the reticle covers more of the target at maximum magnification. The other has a SFP reticle, but covers less at maximum magnification. Most opt for the FFP reticle for ease of ranging dialing. I opted for the SFP model because I wanted the finer reticle.

Thank you very much for the additional input, that is a very good selling point
