If I recall, the Nikon African was going for around $250 there.

Perhaps calling the DMS-1 a POS was going a bit far, but I am sort of an optics snob. I shoot A LOT and value good glass, which can be had for under $300. I just think that in it's price range, there are lots of good alternatives with better glass.

I was also sorry that Nikon chose a 1" tube, since there are some many nice 30mm QD mounts, and if you want to add a MRD for up close work, most of the decent mounts also assume a 30mm tube.

1-4x seems perfectly adequate for the user's preferred range. Or you could look at a number of fixed power scopes specifically designed for the AR.

Unless I'm mistaken, both American Defense and Larue make 1" versions of their mounts, but then again, I don't know if the OP is going to want to spend as much on the mount as he does on the scope. For his purposes, he may do just as well with a set of warne permanent mount rings.

Tony, you are right about the AD and Larue mounts - actually they have interchangeable detachable rings....so if you change scopes later that requires it, you only need buy rings not a whole new mount. But you are also correct that both of these mounts are high end items - best cost effective one on the market if you don't mind it not having quick release is the Burris PEPR IMO. On a seperate note, I'd go with a cantilevered mount on these types of scope on th AR platform - rings alone will likely not allow correct eye relief.

I used to believe you could get away with cheap chinese crap scopes - but have since learned that it is generally a false economy. I've had a few cheapies, and almost without exception, have had issues like wandering zeros, variable powers having different poi's throughout the zoom range, when you adjust windage, it also adjusts elevation, etc. It often seems like a mouse could fart nearby and you zero would get thrown off. The result was I never able to trust them. Might be ok on a .22 plaything, but as a rule I think super cheap and scopes doesn't mix well. You don't need to spend *too* much more for a decent japanese made scope - world of difference.

+1 Kwanger, and i'll add that NCStar is amongst the worst that I have ever had the displeasure to use (only one that gets close is a BSA).

:)

I put the Nikon M223 2-8x32 on my AR and I am very impressed. I went with the one with the rapid action turret. Once I zeroed it at 100 yds, all I have to do is dial the distance to 200 and I am right back on target. The optics are very clear. I have it mounted on the Wilson Combat 1 piece mount. The mount is steel and a very solid, nice piece.

I have a Burris Fullfield II 2-7 x 32. I also have the Burris PERP mount. Great little setup. Can pop it off for iron sights use. Accuracy is very good when mounting back on rifle. Has a real good tactical look to it. Price is cheap for both, maybe $200 on-line + shipping for both. Check out Ebay, Look for seller a1bargains for burris scopes. Lifetime warrantee on the scope as well.

Indeed, AD does have a 1" variant. Too bad they don't make an MRD ring like the LaRue.

There are a lot of considerations mounting a scope on a AR. I bought the cantilever ADM mount to put my 2.5-10X Nightforce on top of my AR. I don't shoot a scoped rifle with my nose to the charging handle and generally shoot with my UBR stock fully extended. It turned out that the position most comfortable for me had me putting the scope in a position that did not require the use of a cantilever mount. I could have done just as well getting a set of Warne ultra high rings to mount the scope.

Setups differ, so try to buy from someone that takes returns. LOL.
