In my previous thread I made the mistake of saying that I wanted an "assault" rifle. What I meant is, an AR-15 style carbine. I have looked at a few, and found that most are under $1000. The question is..... all seem to be the same basic platform, but what brand should I buy? Bushmaster, Olympic arms, rock river arms, etc... Looking for opinions based on experience please. AR-15 style carbine is what I want.

As I'm sure you noticed, there are many, many companies offering rifles in this platform. You'll also note that they are all still in business despite having so many competitors. There are MANY quality companies you can buy from.

I have a RRA upper myself. So do many others. I love mine and others love their rifles as well. A few people who I defer to on the subject of AR-15s have said that RRA is one of the best bang for the buck buys currently.

You also should not ignore the option of building the rifle yourself. A stripped lower, that is the part of the lower frame that the grip, stock, trigger, and magazine go into, is considered the firearm part of the gun and hence what is subject to the usual firearm laws. Buy or have one transfered to a gun shop, then shop around for the rest. You can find some really good deals out there. Everything except that lower can be ordered and shipped to your door.

Once you have a stripped lower, it's just a matter of buying a lower parts kit (the trigger, grip, and other parts) and a stock (and parts it needs in the case of a carbine style stock) to finish the lower half the rifle. This can be done using basic hand tools (pin punches, pliers, tape, possibly a small hammer) without needing a work bench. The upper takes more specialized tools so many just order them pre-built.

My AR was my second rifle and I found it to be pretty easy to put it all together. My lower is from stag, my upper and lower parts kit are from RRA, and my stock is a Magpul CTR. I have no complaints about any of these components.

For a base model under $1000..... RRA, and Stag Arms make very high quality ARs used by multipule police forces. Olympic arms is rifght in the middle. My only experiance is with higher end models, LMT, Bushmaster and POF-USA are good choices. My POF just arrived a couple days ago, and it ROCKS!!!! (actually, the reciol is nill due to a brake) All the above brands are good, either i have one, or i know someone who does.

FWIW...A few months ago I was in your shoes. After a LOT of looking and agonizing, I went with a completed Stag lower for $230 and then ordered a complete Stag upper for $499 and put the two pieces together and pushed home the two pins. Saved 11% excise tax right off the top. I've put a little over 600 rounds thru it so far with not a single failure of any type and I'm about as happy with this purchase as it is humanly possible to be. And I'm a hard SOB to please ;)

It looks just like this.....

it really depends on what kinda of shooter you are and what the projected amount of use is gonna be, if you are gonna shoot it every other blue moon.then you could go with the lower end makers. howeve if you plan to be hard on the ar and run it hard, ie shoot alot, go to training courses etc, then you want to go a different direction.

if you are like me and you want to run the gun hard and train with it hard in every kinda enviornmental condition there is, you should go with Bushmaster or Stag (for the amount of money that you want to spend). i have owned/shot/trainned with about a dozen different bushmasters and they have all been great and ran beautifully. from the predator model, the 20" a2 model, a2-a3 carbine models, and everything in between.
i can vouch for bushmaster they are good to go in my book.

Yep, Bushmaster is the best bang for my buck. You MIGHT?? need to "add" to carrier key &/or castle nut staking,I had to one time, only one time, not even BMs doing in that case.Luv em.
Don't know how many forums you read, but on some of them, buying a Bushmaster will make your hair fall out, your wife leave you,& your house might even burn down, maybe even the day you order it!

In my opinion DPMS or Stag is the only way to go. I have built both and find they are great products. Bushy is my next choice. I have owned and deployed with Colt and I don't find it superior in any way. Not that Colt isn't good stuff I just don't think it's better.

You may find this to be of some use.

this may also have some useful information.

In general...

The Colt 6920 is still the measuring stick that all others are compared to. Yes, it costs more than almost all other comers as well, but they are the closest thing to a military issue M4 that you can buy.

The Noveske N4 Carbine is most widely known for the barrel. They use a higher grade of steel, with a thicker chrome-lining.

LMT is the best deal going when you buy the upper, lower, and BCG separately (see my second link above). You can get a rifle that is a pubic-hair away from a Colt for about $400 less. Bravo Company USA also sells a complete upper that is just a little bit better than the LMT, and is a little bit cheaper to boot.

Charles Daly Defense (yes, THAT Charles Daly) is a newcomer to the market but is proving to be VERY promising. People are reporting actual street prices of around $1k and CD is hitting virtually all of the required specs.

The S&W M&P15 is still going through some growing pains IMHO brought on by shifting vendors. At first they were nothing more than rebadged Stags, then they went to assembly in house with one set of vendors, and now they've shifted vendors again for, at least, the BCG. Because of all this they are hard to pin down, but can still be a good value at around $900.

Sabre Defence tend to be a little pricey for what they are, but they are working to make all of their bolts and barrels HPT/MPI which is a good thing. In the meantime, if you want a factory complete rifle with a mid-length gas system they are a good bet, and their barrel steel is almost as good as Noveske's but with out the beefier chrome-lining.

Armalite have been coming on strong recently. They're carrier keys look to be getting staked better, they've gone back to the M4 feedramps, etc. They are, however, very happy with 4140 barrel steel and don't look to be changing. I consider them to be a bit pricey for the features offered.

CMMG is another one that can be hit or miss. If you know how to pick the right options on their site, you can get a rifle that (at least on paper) rivals a Colt or an LMT. The problem is that you have to know which options to pick, and even then it's no guarantee as they tend to shift vendors.

Stag is a pretty good value at their price point. If you're limited to spending $850, and can't cough up the extra $100 to assemble an LMT, then it's a good way to go. Just read through this and bring it up to speed.

Bushmaster is just too damn expensive for what you get. You can get an equal rifle for less money, or get a better rifle for the same price. Either way, they don't make much sense.

Rock River Arms is an example of a rifle that's almost as good as the Bushmaster, but slightly cheaper. Problem is, the Stag is a better gun for less. RRA also tends to substitute red locktite where things should be staked, and prefers to alter the feedramps with a dremel. Neither of these indicate a good methodology at all.

Olympic and DPMs.. well.... not sure what to say here. They fill a niche, I suppose.

I've got Bushmasters, Oly, Colt, Kuehl (dedicated 22 LR upper) and Stag (southpaw). Colt was my first and I've still got it. Unfortunately, everything is in exile out-of-state.

JonB, I like that chart :D. I don't agree with it, but I like it.

I've had experience with Colt, Armalite, CMMG and Bushmaster. Of a dozen or so I've owned over the years (I presently have a CMMG M4, a "mostly" Bushmaster Varminter and an Armalite AR10SB), I have only had one minor issue with a Bushmaster that turned out to be ammo related.

Or you could do this...my latest Barak-"Zippity Doo Dah"-Obama-up-yours-AR-build...this one is a 6.8 SPC. Build 'em while you still can....

  • DPMS 5.56 lower
  • Stag/CMT M4 upper
  • Badger Gen II TacLatch
  • RRA 2-stage NM trigger
  • VLTOR stock
  • WOA 18" SS SPR profile barrel and bolt
  • PWS FSC30 flash hider / comp
  • YHM front sight
  • Brownells HK-type rear sight
  • ERGO grip
  • Magpul triggerguard
  • MI low profile gas block and mid-length gas system
  • YHM FF rifle-length quad rail handguard
  • MI sling mounts
  • EoTech 511
  • PRI mags

Built it in an afternoon (or less) for $1200 without optics as shown above, but yuou can easily knock that down to WAY under $1000 without the fancy doo-dads. Currently coming in at 1.5 MOA with SSA ammo and using a 4X magnifier with the EoTech. No reloads tested yet but I'm sure I can get it under 1 MOA with reloads and a more precise scope.

That PWS comp/flashhider works really well. A little puff of air coming back, but it takes what little recoil the 6.8 has and makes it much closer to a 5.56.
